Internship no more :(

So now it's been a few weeks since I finished my internship and I must say that I couldn't be more grateful to have had time to complete it at The Urban List. It was a wonderful experience and definitely one that I'll never forget and take away with me on my journey of becoming a PR/Marketing professional.

Reflecting on what I have learned, the internship has made me a lot more tech-savvy and has opened my eyes up to a number of different tools that PR and marketing professionals use in the field. Who knew there could be so much out there. From the likes of Instagram scheduling to using programs such as Salesforce, ESSGeorge and even Google drive. I have become more aware with how PR professionals and digital marketers can keep up with interesting and detailed content to suit the likes of their audience. On another note, I have had great success with using Google Drive now after my internship and basically do most of my assignments through Google Docs and even my excel spreadsheets which I had no idea you could use - super handy for anyone who isn't aware!

Being at the Urban List has opened up my eyes to a world where anything is possible. Seeing what is created in the office and then it being published online to their audience and to a majority of their personal outlets on social media takes so much effort and hard work and the guys at The Urban List seriously have it down packed. To generate so much content and information even in a day like they do... seriously didn't think it would be possible. But anything is possible if you put your mind to it, right?

Apart from becoming more technologically savvy and involved, another thing I have learned is how to draw upon my personal creativity. I'm not creative at all and I believe public relations professionals need to have some sort of creative flare, whether it be in the way they write, generate content, speak etc. To be creative is being unique and different which is what drawers an audience. Definitely something I have learned during my time at TUL.

Couldn't thank these guys enough, for the endless amounts of teas, experience, food outings and of course all of the laughs. What a wonderful internship I had, I'm ever so grateful.

Got to meet the second in charge of The Urban List - Awesome!

Coming into the final days of my internship, I was lucky enough to meet the second in charge of The Urban List, Prue Bauer. She was hilarious and so passionate about her job and her position in the company. Prue is in charge of overlooking group partnerships at The Urban List. The Perth Urban List office was about to be under construction as it was fairly new and needed booths for personal meetings and over course other office-y things. Prue had flown from her home town of Brisbane to Perth to negotiate the layout of the new office and of course to check in with us Urban List folk on the west side.

It was great meeting her and hearing her stories on how the Urban List came about. Her partner is in fact the director of The Urban List who's name is Susannah George and leads the Brisbane Urban List team (where it all began). It was great to hear about the development of the Urban List and how it became what is was today. Susannah George was the daughter of a third generation entrepreneur and has had the opportunity to work all over the world such as Paris and LA. She studied at the QLD University of Technology and studied abroad in the US at UCLA and onto Harvard Business School.

Food is always a huge agenda at The Urban List as everyone who works there lives and breathes food! So of course we got to go to lunch to one of the yummiest dumpling houses in Perth. This was a great way to interact with Prue on a greater level and away from a professional environment. She was very helpful and spoke to me about the importance of content in a marketing and PR situation. Her words were 'content is key'. It is a very true statement as in todays day and age, readers are going to be intrigued with your content if it is different, engaging and unique. People get so bored reading the same old thing. This is where I believe that the Urban List have succeeded as their content is fresh, unique and different.

Working at the internship has opened my eyes and has made me much more aware of how important it is to post content that is different and that is engaging.

Expect the unexpected!

Today marks the end of the first week of my placement and I have to say my personal expectations have been very much incorrect so far!

I am undertaking my placement at a small events company called JumpClimb. They are most well known for their annual Mt Lawley community event The Beaufort Street Festival that runs over one day in November. The festival is the largest one day festival in Western Australia and because of this, has gained traction nationally.

The company currently has two directors and a pretty confusing amount of employees that seem to come and go with only three staff members that currently permanent. The other employees are either contracted on a part time basis or are employed as sub-contractors.

In my first week I have researched different self-inflating, adult bouncy castle objects, helped map out a site for Beaufort Street rollercoaster, thought about ways to encase a DJ inside a fibreglass UFO structure and read about fifty arts grant applications detailing from a barn yard chicken sculptures that you can race, to interactive, moving murals and transportable art caves that you can literally walk through and be totally immersed in art. I get the feeling that is placement is going to be fairly interesting!

From this internship I am hoping to gain a broader sense of the public relations industry with a focus on events management. I would really like to get some more experience writing publishable communications like press releases and to gain some practical event experience to see how events work from an industry standard.

That's all for now!
