The First Seven Days

27/6/11 - Day 7

Well I am now about a third of the way through my Public Relations placement at the Asthma Foundation of WA and I have so far had mixed reactions towards the experience...

I have been currently doing work experience once a week, and during that time the foundation has had a change over of staff, which means I have worked with a number of different people in different aspects of the company. However due to this I feel I was not getting the best experience as I am not entirely sure they knew what to do with me, so my first few weeks have been filled with mass phone calls, and the completion of odd jobs that needed doing, which I cannot say was a whole lot of fun, but it is kind of what I had expected from my placement.

Thankfully though my expectations have recently been exceeded with the arrival of a new Marketing and PR Manager, who has set me on to tasks including the creation a public relations plan for the foundation's use of social media, a crisis management plan and an analysis of competitor's offerings in terms of membership. This has tested my skills and has been so much fun to do!

Previously I was worried that I would get out into the workforce and not know what I was doing, or my employer would have high expectations for me which I would be unable to fulfill. Doing my placement at the Asthma Foundation of WA has been such a confidence boost as it has made me realise that I am capable of doing great work within public relations, and I am looking forward to working there again tomorrow!

Hi Jayde

Your placement sounds really good! Great that the new PR Manager has given you such a lot of responsibility - thats great.

I did my placement at PPR and I too found some of the tasks a little bit menial. But then - those little tasks are needed to successfully run the bigger tasks and implement ideas.

Glad that your placement has a bit more direction now!
