FIRST DAY OF PR WORLD

Osedilwe Boitshwarelo
LUCT

I started my internship on the 5th December 2011 to 27th January 2012 with 8tv, it is  private malaysian Chinese television station, previously know as MetroVision Channel 8. it was officially launched in 2004 as 8tv after being acquired my Media Prima Berhad. 8tv is a sister channel of TV3, ntv 7 and TV9.

8tv has two sections of PR; Chinese and urban on which I was placed under the urban PR. I have learnt a lot of things not only in PR field but also exposed me to the mass communication course. 8TV is under Media Prima Berhad which is the largest integrated media group in Malaysia, with interests in TV, radio and print media as well as content creation, events management and outdoor advertising operating under one roof.

Joining PR associations from 8tv was a great way to stay in touch with the PR world. Attending conferences, receiving newsletters, daily media monitoring, writing press releases, etc kept me in the loop and the networking opportunities were endless. Put myself out there and make my name known in the PR world. Being an intern gave me the advantage to ask questions and allows me to find my place in the PR world.

The first week of my internship, my former intern taught me to do media monitoring, sends invites to media houses for press conference of SHOWDOWN 2012 and write press release of Model a’ la mode a mandarin romantic drama. Showdown is a reality dance show that's taking it from the streets. Exciting hip-hop and fusion dance styles come together to battle it out along with professional training and tricky challenges all thrown into the mix.

Wow! Sounds like you've been doing so many interesting things. That's pretty exciting that you've been able to not only be involved in not only the PR activities but also see what happens in the mass communications world! Did you noticed many differences between the journalistic way of doing things at the Tv network and the PR methods employed? I'm not sure what your studying, but I'm majoring in both PR and journalism and find it so interesting how different they are, yet how reliant each is on the other! I imagine working at a TV network would be a great way to see the similarities and differences in real life. Can't wait to read more of your blogs. Best of luck. Ruby :)

Rudy! yes there are some differences in PR and Tv networks, you will notice that most of television focus more on entertainment e.g 8tv more into entertainment. I am studying Journalism and Public Relation, on which i may say there are more related somehow. Sitting at home watching our favourite TV show we may think that only actors and presenters are needed to make a television program. In fact, the task takes many highly skilled people,Writers and Researchers are the people who are responsible for what presenters and actors actually say on screen.

Public relations always involved the bigger picture.  PR is all about how the organization is perceived by the community at large and will be getting coverage for the organizations in print, on the radio or TV.
