My Public Relations Experience At Selibe-Phikwe Town Council

Hello

For me to complete my Public Relations module i had to do an internship which will help me to apply the Public Relations theories that i have learnt in class. I found a placement at Selibe-Phikwe Town council and was working under the supervision of the Principal Public Relations Officer at the Organisation.

It was an honor to work at the organisation more especially that it represents the wellbeing  of the people of Selibe Phikwe, a town that i was born and raised  at. I felt like I was finally doing something for my town and that i was making a difference in improving the lives of the people of my town.

My first week at the organisation was amazing, a had a tour around the organisation and being introduced to  different departments that it had, trust me, there are a whole lot of them: Accounts, Rates, Education, Physical Planning, Fire, Social and Community Development, Parks the list is endless. So now you can get a picture of what I was dealing with, I had to know all these departments and what each is doing by head.

The first thing i did was writing a notice because there were some renovations going on in the council premises so i had to inform the respected clients about it and ask for their cooperation. Writing a notice was a piece of cake but the problem was that i had to translate it to Setswana. I may be a Motswana but writing Setswana is hard, if a Motswana is reading i think he/she understands me. Some English words don't have Setswana words for them so this was a challenge for me.. I had to ask my supervisor for help and she did, how sweet of her.

The rest of the week was just fun, the people were welcoming and always giving me a big smile, this made me feel comfortable around the place and getting calls from clients was what i did most for the rest of the week.

The rest of the experience will be coming along with more posts. Hope you enjoyed reading this one.

Stay Safe

I can tell from reading your post that your placement was great and that you had the opportunity to do actual PR tasks.I can relate to your experience of having to translate a notice in English to Setswana language because it is very difficult even if it is one's mother tongue. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.
