Hectic First Day. How to get easily bored on your first day at work?

There are a lot of things which could certainly happen on your first day in a big corporate company but entering a communication department where nobody knows you’re coming push up the records. Feeling like an alien, the two questions which came to my mind. Should I make my new colleagues comfortable about me or should they make me feel at my ease? I was strongly bothered on how I should react towards them. My emotions and reactions were suddenly completely contradictory but the only thing I kept in mind: “The first impression is always the best”.

Being bored for your first day is particularly common but spending your day reading eight newspapers is just the best thing which could ever happen. The reason was meanwhile justified. Having an idea on the company’s visibility in the press which apparently belongs to the morning rituals. In fact the department where I am actually are responsible to invite journalists for multiple events organised by the corporate with my beloved press releases and also for writing for their little magazines “The Source” which is released every three months.

The most exciting part of the day, meeting various professionals in the web and events section where they also proposed my help to know how they update social platforms regularly or how they prepared for the event of the day which was free tickets for the movie TAKEN 3 to retain the biggest customers of the company as strategic plan. This department seems to be much more interesting and thrilling than staying from 9 am to 4 pm reading newspapers but I guess it is only my first day.

The good news of the day. Officially a member of my company.

Hi Anne-Clothilde,

I know this will seem weird, but i actually had the same misadventure on my first day of internship.
I was just thinking like you, whether i should make my new colleagues comfortable about me or should they make me feel at ease?

“The first impression is always the best” - i have always heard about this saying, i was keeping this in mind too. This phrase running on my mind, i felt somehow stressed by it, i was like, do they see how embarrassed i am or do i look okay?
Then i tried to calmed down and say to myself, those people in front of me, they too might not feel comfortable in such situation. They too have had a first day in their workplace.
So i kept on smiling and tried to make them feel more comfortable than i was. They explained me that they had a slight confusion with the dates and interns who were supposed to come. This wrong start did not prevent us to enjoy my internship.

I must admit that after those 5 weird and most embarrassing minutes, they were glad to welcome me. Pamela, my supervisor, was really kind ,she even proposed me to start with a half day so that they can get prepared and find some interesting tasks for me.

I really enjoyed reading your blog pos and even more since we've both gone through an hectic first day. I would probably have enjoyed if you had given some tips about how best to deal with such situation, since you've experienced it yourself.

Though overall, it is nice to see that you too managed to take this situation with a positive mind set. I am not sure everyone would have done so.

Good luck for the report,
Hope to hear from you,
Anne-Julie.
