After 10 weeks of my placement I have done a great deal of learning and not just in terms of the tasks I have been set but about myself. Having worked in the hospitality industry for around 5 years whilst I have been completing my studies I was convinced that I was a great worker. However I quickly realised that this all had to do with my extensive experience and sense of belonging after working in the same job for such a long time. Once I was put in front of a computer in an office where I did not really know anybody well and did not really know what was expected of me in terms of deadlines and quality of work, I was lost.
It is not that I dislike the change of scenery but it is taking some time to get used to. The projects that I have been involved in so far include producing web and social media content for campaigns such as the '2016 Million Paws Walk' and 'Dogs Die in Hot Cars'. I have also helped to research publications and events that have not yet been utilised by the organisation and could be useful in communication efforts. One task that I did not expect to be quite so troublesome was contacting local councils seeking their support with one of the campaigns. Discussing animal welfare with people often strikes a very emotional reaction and being new to the team I felt as though I did not always provide the correct answers.
As I said before I am learning and my team members have been extremely supportive and accepting when I make mistakes. I think the most valuable thing that they have provided me with is the chance to make an error and to then provide me with the constructive feedback that I need. If I had never slipped up in the first place I would never know what the best way is to do things.
Welcome to PR Internship - YOUR opportunity to put everything you have learned over the past years at university into practice and to get a thorough insight into what public relations is like "in the real world". This Blog allows you to reflect on your experiences, share insights with other students across campuses and to possibly give advice and support to fellow students.
