When I arrived at Northbridge Piazza I was greeted with the colours and sounds of the markets in full swing. I found the girls from the office and asked how things were going, then set out to meet the other organisation's representatives at their various stalls. Oxfam, CARAD, Oaktree, the Humanitarian Group, RRAN, ICEA, representatives from WA's UN branch and Curtin's Human Rights Group were all there. It was lovely to meet all the passionate people behind these organisations and find out more about what they do.
Throughout the night I thought about the press release that would follow the event. My supervisor and I had asked for one of the staff members to take photographs, and I asked them if they could please keep an eye on attendance numbers and numbers of those that signed the petition so we could put the information into the release.
It was a great experience to send out the media releases leading up to this event, and following it. It's really assisted me in understanding the type of detail to note about the event in order to put the release together. As well as that, I've had to spend a fair bit of time looking at the way local outlets cover events and it's exciting to think about the impact media coverage can have on the event itself.
Until next time, Jolene x

Hi Jolene,
Its fantastic that you are able to be apart of such an event. I find that these events are a great way to meet people in the industry and to develop your ideas and understanding of PR. During my placement i have learnt that networking is key to success. Knowing contacts at media outlets and organisation CEO's really helps when trying to organise and promote an event as such.
Did your organisation involve you in the process of planning the event and were you able to apply skills on event planning and management that you had learnt at university?
Its great that you were given the opportunity to see the whole event through, from the beginning to the end, i think that this really helps to understand the whole process.
I found the best way to develop my writing skills was by writing press releases. Have you found this too? Now i try and do one press release a day, even if it is a practice one. I have found that refining this skill has really helped in the way that i communicate to others. I recently wrote a press release for the opening of a school gymnasium, that the premier was attending. Unfortunately we were unable to generate a huge amount of media interest. Did you have any luck at generating media interest for this event.
Good luck with the rest of your internship.
Georgia :)
