Starting fresh in a familiar workplace

Hey everyone,

This is my very first blog post for the PR Internship!

I think I first need to explain how I got the position at The Urban List Perth and what 'starting fresh in a familiar workplace' actually means.

I have actually been interning for TUL since August 2015, one day a week. Purely for the experience, I was so excited to enter an actual adult workplace after working in retail my whole life. In just under two months I already had the responsibility of writing a weekly article and was putting new businesses and organisations on the website every week. Knowing that my work would would be seen by thousands of Perthians was just crazy and the excitement got even greater.

When I submitted the forms in for the PR internship to get approved at The Urban List, I was initially a little hesitant as I wasn't sure what more I could be learning.

So day one comes around, my 'first day' and already I had a list of new things that I would be learning over the next 20 days. Things like business outreach, Facebook and Instagram posting, Google Analytics, SEO's and so so much more. Things that I have learnt about at uni but have never actually been able to put into practice.

So I guess what I mean by 'Starting fresh in a familiar workplace' means is that no matter how long you have been working for an organisation, I feel that there is ALWAYS more to learn. However, by already starting at TUL, I was able to fully immerse myself in work on the first day and already feel comfortable in my surroundings and with my fellow colleagues in the office.

I am SO excited to finish the remainder of my '20 internship days' at TUL and then be able to take my experiences and knowledge into the workforce wherever it may take me.

Thank you for reading!

Stay tuned,

- Shelby

Hi Shelby! I think that it is really cool that first of all, you have been interning at The Urban List (LOVE the website), and that you get to do your internship unit there. I'm sure that partially doing it through the structured internship unit will teach you new things. It would be interesting to see how your 20 days differ to what you have done so far. Looking forward to read about the rest of your experiences! xx Stav
