"Experience never goes out of fashion" - The Intern (2016)
Before I move forward, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Clinton Chua Han Yong and I'm currently a final year student studying taking Bachelor of Arts Mass Communication (Public Relations) from Curtin University Sarawak. I am currently interning at Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad which is a Plantation Company. I am placed in the PR department of the company alongside some incredibly talented and skillful individuals.
Initially, Sarawak Oil Palm Berhad was not my first choice, I had my eye set on a different company. However, due to some minor set backs I was placed in SOPB and since my first day? no regrets.
The process was not as tedious as I anticipated it would be. I thought it would require long weeks of waiting for the company to get back to me and countless paperwork. Luckily, I got the call stating that I got the job right after applying just a few days before. I've sent my lecturer all the necessary documents and next thing you know? It was my first day. Loving the efficiency.
The "First week" from what I hear are usually chill, boy was I wrong. I entered in my first week already given a few tasks to do and I didn't expect anything less. During my first day on the 15th August 2016 (Monday) like any other for a Trainee intern, I was introduced to the staff in the PR department and also welcomed by my warmhearted colleagues who I now call friends. I reported to Ms Monica from the Human resource department at 8am (SHARP) and was then brought to the PR department to start my first day. The people here are so welcoming and they constantly smiled and greeted each other which I find essential in a good working environment. Under the guidance of my supervisor APRM Haji Abdul Razak, and colleagues Billy Ngu and Enki. I was briefed with regards to the company and how the PR department functions in Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad.
Upon the first week of my internship, I was already given the responsibility to edit pictures of the factory sites of the company, draft articles for the company newsletter, write up proposals for an upcoming company event, assist in educational visits for local private schools and even design greeting cards to be given with Moon cakes in conjunction with Mid-Autumn festival for Sarawak Oil Palm Berhad associates.
This first week has taught me a lot on time management and to always expect the unexpected. This is because, during the educational visits that SOPB organised for SM Sains, we experienced a bit of miscommunication which lead to the delay of the site visit to one of the factories of SOPB in Lambir, Miri. However, the site visit went well and the students we brought in had a great time and learned a lot at the factory. Furthermore, I also practiced my time management skills by ensuring I completed tasks given to me on time such as writing the draft article for the company newsletter and also the edited photos.
In my first week I was already thrust into the hype of it all and I enjoyed every second of it. Learning about proper time management and putting what I have learned to the test. The adrenaline rush it gave me, the realization that even though i am still an intern, the real world working industry is real and i relish and gain as much as I can from the moments. I look forward to the rest of my internship at SOPB and I do hope I learn even more than I have after this week.

Hello Clinton,
Nice to meet you! By reading your post, I think you are really enjoy your Internship at Sarawak Oil Palm Berhad. It is only the first week of Internship and you have gained the important lesson - time management. It is important to have good time management in our life. I am glad to hear that you are practicing the time management skills by ensuring you finished the tasks that given by your supervisor on time. Keep it up!:)
Besides, I agree with the point that you mentioned which is expect the unexpected. This has reminded me that I did not expect to be the emcee of the event. When I received the email from my supervisor and stated that I was the emcee for the event, I was so shocked and panic. However, I overcome it and gained a lot of unforgettable experiences.
Lastly, it is nice to work in a company that is active in PR. Take the good opportunity and present the best part of yourself to the company, Clinton!
I wish you all the best!
