So here I am sitting at my desk on my last day of being an
intern for PPR. Four weeks, full time, 5 days a week, 9-5 it has been a lot to
take in especially while I am still completing three other units at uni (still
don’t know how I have done it). My time at PPR has been full on with so many different
learning experiences as well as meeting some really great people along the way.
Public Relations is a big world but like my intern buddy
Jodie said in one of her past blogs it is definitely not like Samantha Jones PR
life in Sex and the City (kind of disappointed). There have been really quiet
days in the office where I would have not so much tasks to do or there would be
crazy days were I would have so much on that the 9am to 5pm went too quickly!
Although I have been studying a Public Relations degree for over the
last three years when someone would ask me what do you actually do in PR… I couldn’t
really give an answer. My answer would be something along the lines of “You
like write media releases and do stuff in the media and use social media
sometimes??” Such a poor answer I know, but I really didn’t fully comprehend what
a PR person did on the daily. After completing this internship, I really
do now know what Public Relations is and it is so much more than a few media
releases here and there. It’s about building important relationships with the media
and meeting or exceeding your client’s expectations by doing great things in
the media world that will really help their company progress.
In my role here at PPR I completed many different tasks both
being in the office and out. Working alongside Jodie my buddy intern also a
Curtin student it was very comforting to have someone who also had no idea what
was going on half the time. All the consultants at PPR were so welcoming and
made Jodie and I feel so comfortable to ask any questions we had which was an
extra bonus for us. I completed media drops around Perth on behalf of clients,
wrote media alerts and media releases as well conducted A LOT of research for
the consultants to do with the tasks they were undertaking at the time. Jodie
and I also got to get out of the office and attend media conferences and media
events which you would have heard about in my earlier blogs as these were big
days!

Goodbye morning tea for Jodie and I. |
Leaving this internship I am scared to see what is ahead of
me! Finishing my degree at the end of this year is a big deal to me, as I’m sure
to you all. What’s next for me? I have no idea – friends and family are already
starting to ask me and it really does hit you in the face with how real this
is. It’s always been school then university – it’s all I or we have ever known.
In saying this, we can only move forward and I’m excited for
whatever the future may hold for me. This internship at PPR has given me so
much more confidence to get out there and put myself into the working world and
I am so glad I did it. For anyone that may me questioning an internship or
finding work experience – I would say 100% do it because it has helped me so
much!
