Third week in and as I am writing this I only have 3 and
half days to go of my internship, seriously where did the time go! I feel
though that I have been very lucky with my placement and am really happy with my
choice of doing it here at PPR. I have had so many different experiences which
has really opened me up to the world of PR…. and woah it’s a big one! When I was
always asked what industry of PR do you actually want to go in I was never
really sure but I’ve always been interested in fashion, maybe a little sport
and of course food but now I have been opened to many more ideas.
Today I was invited my one of the consultants at PPR to join
him in attending the RIU Good Oil Conference held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
So yes… this was a conference with hundreds of men and presentations about oil
and gas. If anything I did learn a bit about the industry that its declining or
already declined… not too sure. Still too difficult for me to understand.
Our role as the PR people was to look after the media. There
was a media room away from all the commotion were the journalists could go to
write any notes or stories they wish. This room was also used by the
journalists to interview any major talent that was at the conference in which
they could include in their news stories. Our job was to control the media room
and work with the media and to help them with any enquires. I was explained by
the PR consultant that this is actually a very important job because if the
journalist thinks it too hard to write a story or to find someone they want to
interview – they simply just want do it which in our case is a fail on our part
as we want our client to be in the media.

The conference was long and to be honest I had no idea what
they were talking about but yet again it’s another learning experience which
has opened my mind to yet another side of PR and in a different industry.
Although I still don’t think I see myself ever wanting to work in the oil and
gas industry in my future career!
On the plus side we got a free lunch and desert so there’s
always perks and we all love a bit of free food!

Going to such a conference must have been an amazing experience! How many journalists were there in the media room?
I'd love to do some PR work in the oil and gas industry in the future.
And the chocolate desserts look delicious :)

This opportunity sounds quite great, intellectual conferences and mud cake what else could you ask for from an internship. I do understand what you mean, sometimes in university, we are given the assignments and the presentations over and over again, and if you get a good mark, you become convinced that this must be what you should do. However actually enjoying it is another thing, and you can only know that from experience and great people around to teach you. It's great that have been able to come to this conclusion through a university internship unit, most people never find out.
