Research and its Relevance

Here I am on my second week of my internship planning an event that will happen at Curtin Tav, which will involve teaching staff and students socialising in an informal setting.

Everything was all planned from the flyer and Facebook event page. I was confident in myself that nothing could really go wrong. However, it all went wrong.

My supervisor and I assumed that the event will be successful and we will get the numbers, but only one person signed up for the event. We were determined to find out why no-one wanted to go to the Tav on a Friday night.

In my PR Planning and Evaluation unit that week we learnt about the importance of surveys and how they are a good method to use when doing research. So with my limited knowledge from class, I created 2 surveys one for students and one for staff, which were aimed at finding out why no one wanted to go to the Tav.

The responses led us to find out that both the students and teachers wanted to keep a professional distance between them and meeting at the Tav would break that distance. So we had to cancel the event after that planning.

What I have learnt is that before proceeding with any new event or any event that is, you must do the research because not everyone has the same interest as you.

If we had done the research beforehand, it would have saved us time and maybe we could have thought of another event which was not as social as being in the Tav that both the students and teachers would have enjoyed.
