Try me!

Try Me!

The best part of this PR internship is getting the opportunity to network and to attend several events. Knowing the type of person that I am, working in an office everyday and sitting at a desk from 8.30am-4.00pm is absolutely dreadful for me. During my internship at Omnicane Mauritius, I use to wait and pray for an event to crop up so that I would get to step out of the office and meet people. I would basically jump to the sound of my boss saying ‘let’s go’. I was always extremely keen to attend outdoor events and meetings. Not that I don’t enjoy a peaceful day in the office but outdoor for me is the best.

Simultaneously, events can be very dynamic but also very tiring and disoriented for someone who hasn’t worked ever in her life- “me”. At first, you feel thrilled but when you actually get there, you are lost amidst the crowd, the professionals, the government officials and procedures and the whole context of the event itself. Research is definitely an advantage in such situations as one can do some background check before going to the event. Unfortunately, my boss did not inform me beforehand that we were going to an event on that day and as much as I was pleased with this ‘excursion’, I was very much going there impromptu. Being unprepared and ignorant about something is so frustrating because you don’t understand what is happening or what happened.

The particular event that I attended was a prize giving ceremony by the ministry of environment to winners of the world environment day 2016 competition.  The first price was being sponsored by Omnicane as a plane ticket to Rodrigues and back to Mauritius. The event was well organised though the minister of environment came late and delayed the whole event. The media were there and there were several political, social and environmental officials who were present too. At first I was quite uncomfortable but it was not long when I started to recognise people from the crowd. This made me feel more at ease and that allowed me to be more confident too. Knowing people is definitely the key to public relations.

I am very much convinced that I am not in my element when I don’t do my research beforehand but sometimes you just need to let it be. I was indeed very lost and disengaged during the event but at the end it was much fun and I got to learn about how these political ‘shows’ work. That was the first event that I attended and the ministry of environment of Mauritius was hosting it. I was so ecstatic as I have an immense and endless love for events.  As Omnicane was the sponsor of the winning prize, we were on the front of the pictures and the event. At that moment I felt so proud and grateful that I got the opportunity to work in such a huge billionaire company that has a reputation as such and is so well known and appreciated by Mauritius.

Hi Deepa

We definitely have some things in common; i dislike the 8-4 office life and this is my first time ever work experience too. I recently covered a three days event for my organisation and we faced some difficulties which I believe was pure miscommunication hence in our world, this would be our (PR) fault.

Did you face such things aside to the Minister delaying the event? Or at any other events?

What do you recommend PR practitioners should do in order to make sure that events are conducted smoothly and on time? I believe the Minister has a PR officer too in which should've prevented such things from happening.

Hey Raissa,
Thanks for reading my post :)
ohh am glad that am not the only one who dislikes 'idle' office hours!
Really.. :D how cool, we share lots in common haha :P
Ohh definitely, miscommunication is something very recurrent in this field, it messes everything.
Well, as we were sponsors and guests, we couldn't do anything in the award ceremony when the minister was late.
But you know, I feel that it's pretty common for ministers to arrive late though it's not ethical and polite towards the guests.
He was late by maybe 10 minutes... but it was still inappropriate. Once can be forgiven but not always. Everyone was waiting for him to start the ceremony. I guess when you are a political person, you feel the need to be the 'showstopper' in some sort. What do you think?
Besides that, there was an event, more like an annual lunch that was supposed to happen, but got postponed then cancelled due to the caterer. He got sick and couldn't provide us, so that caused a problem.
One thing that i've learned during my internship is that, events should be planned 6 months in advance. My supervisor actually told me if he could plan events one year in advance, he would. Planning and booking everything is very essential. Last minute issues will eventually arise but can still be managed if planned as necessary.
Sometimes I feel that in cases like the award ceremony, the minister should have a team (which he must and I guess does) that does the work for him, and bring him on time like for celebrities right? Their PR people, guide and instruct them what to do, where to go and what to say for instance. The PR person should have that kind of authority on the person because the latter is a 'public figure' and as a PR person, you are responsible for the image and reputation of the person you are working for.
What do you think? :P
Sorry if I just kept rambling, i tried to answer as much as possible :)
Thanks again
Looking forward for your response and your posts :)
