Unorthodox Working Environments
It was a real struggle for me to land an internship - I applied to countless organisations, but only heard back from a few. However, towards the rapidly approaching deadline, Coogee Beach Surf Life Saving Club offered me a position that I accepted without hesitation.
The Club is basically a sporting and lifestyle organisation consisting of dedicated volunteers and a small number of working staff. I report directly to two supervisors (or perhaps "bosses would be a better description), and meet with them at least once a week. From the start, the job scope that was described to me was something new and kept me on my toes. In all my previous jobs, I mainly focused on "new" media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but this time, I was ONLY in charge of reforming the Club's website. This meant going through the website page by page, link by link, and deciding what was good and what was not. This also meant going back to my two supervisors and saying, "this needs to be changed", or "this Really Really needs to go". Luckily, they agreed with me and suggested what else could be done.
That's just a brief summary of my job scope. With regards to my working space.. Wait, what working space?? The office is a small room for the staff, with no spare room for two interns. Not that I'm complaining, because I get to sit in the main event room, and look out to the ocean as I do my work. The beach is also a minute's walk away, and the cafe below our office, Surfing Lizard, serves great coffee.
Another unique thing that I am really enjoying about this internship is the privilege of flexibility that I am given. This could be due to the fact that most of what I need to do can be done from anywhere with internet access, and does not require me to physically be present most of the time. However, this also means that my two supervisors have (hopefully) a certain amount of trust in me, that I am doing what needs to be done. I like to believe that when trust is given, it should be reciprocated.
For now, the first part of my Website reforming project is well underway, and the next (and majorly complicated) phase will soon be implemented!
See you all then, and thanks for reading!
