My First Few Days

I started my work experience on Wednesday with Trusttech Australia. The organisation has no separate marketing or public relations function so I am rather independent. It feels nice to be able to actually use all the skills I have learnt in my last two-and-a-half years at university. I feel quite useful.

Trusttech Australia is an IT management boutique. My first task has been to establish a newsletter targetted to staff, current clients and prospective clients. Since I really do not know much about IT it has been quite interesting having to conduct so much background research when writing the articles for the newsletter. Another interesting part was to interview my boss.

I am really glad I have kept all my notes from my PR units. PR(Techniques) has come in very handy in designing the newsletter. When preparing for the interview I was constantly referring back to my notes from PR(Media); how to structure and plan an interview.

One concern I do have is that the newsletter is taking a lot more time than I originally thought it would. I find myslef continuously going back and fixing articles and waiting for information. I really hope my employer won't be too disappointed with the time its taking.

Hi id like to point out that seeing as its your first few days with your organisation, you shouldnt feel too bad about falling back with a deadline or the speed your getting work done.. Your naturally at the initiation phase where you need to get acustomed to the way things are at the organisation. Im sure with enough practice and as time goes by you will be sailing through your work : ) dont get discouraged! i suppose its a lot harder if your not working in a team...

Hi there, I want to agree with what you said regarding looking back on old notes for help. When I started my recent placement at Department of Culture and the Arts, I pulled out all of my old notes on media releases, fact sheets etc. everyting and anything I could find to help me do my job better. I think it is a great idea as it will help you do your best possible work. Also don't be too worried about how much time you are taking. We have all been there, myself included and I still worry that perhaps I am taking too long when given tasks. They understand. Just do the best you can, I honestly think it is better to take a little longer (as a work experience person) and produce better quality work, than to rush and be unhappy with what you hand over. Good luck to you. I know you'll be great!!
Kind Regards
Jemma
