The Start of Something Great

Hey Everyone!

Although this week was my first day in my PR Placement position, it was not my first day at the organisation I am completing it at.

Last month I started my employment with Unicredit as their Marketing Assistant. As it is only a part time position I am still very new to the organisation and so am still learning everyone's names and everyday getting more and more information about the business itself – which is extremely confusing and overwhelming as banking is not the easiest industry to get your head around!

Here is what I know so far:

Unicredit is a mutual bank or credit society that was originally developed at the University of Western Australia to benefit it’s staff. It has since expanded to the other universities including Curtin and Murdoch. Unicredit does everything a normal bank does, but it is run by members so there is no need to try and keep shareholders happy, meaning that the products developed benefit members with low fees and competitive interest rates.

On Wednesday I officially put my "PR hat" on and started my first day in the PR department. To start with I sat down with the manager and discussed what aspects of PR interested me. He then tried to tailor my duties to what I would most enjoy. In the end we came to an agreement that I would be involved - and sometimes be completely in charge of the following things:

  • Writing the main article for the quarterly newsletter as well as liaising with the graphic design consultancy in regards to sizing, paper stock, format etc. I would then have the final authorisation to "sign off" on the final newsletter and approve it's print and release.
  • Assisting and coordinating at several sponsorship events at UWA, Curtin and Murdoch.
  • Liaising and negotiating sponsorship agreements with the universities
  • Preparing and presenting a social media plan to the CEO and board of directors
  • Writing press releases for the universities’ newsletters and papers for specified departments

He also gave me the option of thinking of my own PR ideas that could help promote Unicredit to university staff.

This week my main focus was writing the article for the quarterly newsletter. It was MUCH more difficult than I originally thought! I had the freedom to pick my own topic and angle and to write in whatever style I wanted - this made it very difficult for me to make a decision as there were so many different ideas in my head.

After struggling to get started I finally got a clear idea that I wanted to write about and so the writing began! I was lucky enough to have some other things to work on throughout the day so I wasn't stuck writing all the time.

Overall my first day completing PR projects was really good and the time flew! Before I knew it it was 4.30pm and time for me to finish. I was really satisfied with the amount and quality of work I did that day and was excited to keep going the next day.

Can't wait for the weeks ahead and taking on more responsibility!

Enjoy! :)

Sounds like you have a great placement there Catherine! and you must love the fact that your supervisor has tailored your tasks to suit your interests! I'm doing my placement at Curtin which I am also already employed in, so it's good to walk in and feel a bit of familiarity. Good luck with your placement!

Nice to see that you can put you "PR Hat" on in a Marketing Position Catherine! Its great to see that you are using skills in which you have ascertained from your degree. Just like you and Sarah, I too am doing my placement at a familiar surrounding as I have previously worked for HWE Mining. I look forward to seeing the progress of your blogs throughout your placement.
