Hi All,
I hope I am doing this right... If someone could comment just so I know other people can view it that would be awesome!
So I thought today would be as good a day as any to write my first blog, introducing myself and what I’m doing for my PR placement. Today I had my first day in the Marketing department at WesTrac in South Guilford. For those who don't know WesTrac is an extremely large machinery dealership - they provide CAT (the giant yellow trucks) machinery to mine sites across WA, NSW and China. The South Guilford department has over 800 staff. So I was shaking with nerves this morning (also due to the cold weather I’m sure but mostly nerves).
I am working under the Head of Internal Communications (no not HR but similar) and her department is currently in the process of branching out into PR. My supervisor actually has over 12 years’ worth of experience in PR - including working in England before coming to Australia - but was put as head of Internal Communications when she joined WesTrac.
Enough about that, more about my first day: 3 hours was spent completing an online Health, Safety and Environment Induction - which was not all that exciting and I began to wonder why I was so nervous. After lunch at the cafeteria (the workplace is so big it has its own 'main cafe' just like on campus) I was then taken on a tour of the premises and given the low-down on what the company does, what the marketing department does and what I'll be doing.
When we returned to the office, I was set to task on condensing down an information document that would be sent out to WesTrac customers. I was given the information straight out, boring and wordy and horrible and I had to format and tidy up and minimise the wording as it was going out via email. My second task for the day was proofreading and editing a communications toolkit document which will be produced as an A3 booklet for new supervisors to refer to when holding meetings with their employees.
My second work placement date was scheduled and we discussed my potentially working on the internal newsletter while I am on board in the marketing department. It was a nerve-racking yet insightful first day.
I think that’s enough from me - Thanks for listening!

Your blog was interesting to read :)I remember my first day. I rocked up so early but luckily enough I wasted a little time finding the place (Trusttech Australia) so my nerves had the chance to flea.
I was responsible for Trusttech's first ever company newsletter too. One thing I learned was that you have to proofread, proofread and proofread. Even in the end I had spelt a name wrong (it was an impossible name though...). Also another piece of advice would be to make sure your superiors read it in a timely fashion or it can take forever for it to be published...
Hope this helps. Good luck : )
Thank you very much for your comment :) I appreciated knowing that I had successfully posted my first ever blog and reading your advice.
Thank you again for commenting, I'm glad you found it interesting and I won't forget to proofread, proofread, proofread :)
