In my last blog post I spoke about my media coordinator placement at Amnesty International and how much I was enjoying it. I still am, but it hasn't been without its challenges! I'm so busy, and there's just so much to learn!
I recently created a media strategy for the organisation, which was rather well received by my supervisor. He asked that I communicate with Amnesty WA's local action groups in order to find out what they were up to. He had a great idea for me to create survey forms for the groups in order to see if they are undertaking any newsworthy activities.
I've had plenty of other tasks to do as well as there is a night market event coming up next week. Amnesty's Queensland branch sent through a media release for me to send, which I edited and attached a photo to. I had already searched for target publication contacts and deadlines so I was all ready to go once I was happy with it.
I was glad to see a Journalist from the Perth Voice had responded to the media release email by the next morning. He requested more pictures to accompany the release by 10am. Unfortunately it was already 11am when I saw the email. Panicked, I sent him the pictures and apologised for the lateness. Luckily he was really nice about it, and still ran with the story.
I was happy to see a nice write up with a large picture yesterday in their online edition. It was exactly what I was hoping for as the last release I sent off only got a small write up. I've learnt my lesson about dealing with Journalists on deadlines now though, and will make sure I check the work emails very regularly just after a release is sent!
So now I'm waiting to see if other publications respond, as well as Noongar Radio who I've submitted a pitch to. I've been getting a release prepared to follow-up the event, and have been scouting for someone to take photos. Looking forward to Amnesty's Human Rights Night Markets in Northbridge next week, and even though it's on my birthday I have assured my boss I will be there!
Until next time, Jolene x

Well Done! Sounds like they've given you responsibility and by the looks of it you've handled it all very professionally.
Sometimes I'm the same and can feel like everything happens at once. You have a slight moment of panic!!
Also really good that you've learnt how to deal with journalists as they are important to keep in touch with in this industry! Or so they have taught us in Uni. Can't say I have been in a situation as such, yet.
You must also be proud to see all your work published and used! Makes all the work worth it!
Good luck!
