In my last blog I discussed the increase of workload and the exciting aspects of working on an annual client event and a media day for renowned brand ambassador Anna Gare. The second full time week was nothing like the first, which on reflection was expected and not at the same time.
From working in hospitality and retail I’ve come to love a busy work environment and thoroughly enjoyed the rush and running around of such major events that I was able to be a part of. Seeing as it was my first full time week in my internship, I almost expected every week to be as exciting and busy. Although the second week was busy it didn’t have the same element of excitement as they weren’t out of office event days.
The change pulled me down from the busy cloud 9 I was on and back to reality to remember that PR isn’t always fun out of office event days, but a lot of behind the doors work to get prepared for such said events. During the second week I worked on finding a male and female brand ambassador, who had to meet an exact criteria to be appropriate to represent the brand in Australia for the next month. It turned out to be more difficult than expected, especially when their publicist listing is nowhere to be found on the internet to confirm whether they actually do fit the exact criteria you require, or if it’s just gossip over the internet.
The experience so far has been incredible in terms of building up self confidence in the PR industry and have an opportunity to start within a nationally recognised firm. The first couple of part time weeks and the first full time week were very unsettling, not knowing if you’re going to be made to just get the coffee or actually able to put your years of education to use. Working closely with the managing director has been a nerve racking and has taught me to speak up when I need to and not be afraid to ask questions, so that I can learn more.
Here’s a picture of the office, it's a collaborative space that includes a coffee shop and art exhibition. I would love to have my own PR collaborative office space with a coffee shop and fashion boutique one day!

I definitely agree that having out-of-office days can make the working week so much better! I was able to visit a school during my internship and see how an educational program was working with the students - it definitely made the day way more exciting and gave me a great sense of achievement to see what the organisation had created.
I find that it can be quite monotonous just sitting at a desk all day - luckily you have a great collaborative space to work in! Ways that I found to break up the day were simple. I made sure to eat my lunch away from my desk, and to get up and stretch my legs every now and then - even just to go and speak to my colleagues about what they wanted me to do, rather than sending email updates.
Good luck for the rest of your internship!
Makes it all seem a bit more like uni just sitting behind a desk doesn't it! I agree, the out of the office days can be a lot more fun and exciting - especially as an intern. I often was able to tag along on a few meetings outside of the office with my internship which was always a lot more fun! However, I wasn't able to attend many PR events unfortunately which is an experience I feel like I've missed out on compared to other people's blogs. But we shouldn't underestimate the desk work experience, in the end it all comes together to create good public relations and I'm sure the experience will be valuable when we start working in the industry! Hope you've enjoyed the rest of you internship :)
