It has been around 6 months since
I commenced my professional placement at the RSPCA WA and it has all been
leading to this final stretch. The largest annual fundraising event for the
animal cruelty charity is the Million Paws Walk and in its 20th year this is
expected to be the biggest yet.
Majority of the event organisation is carried out by the Event Coordinator however it is the responsibility of the communications team to assist in boosting numbers of registrants and fundraisers leading up to the walk. My supervisor allowed me to carry out majority of this task, which has been a wonderful opportunity and learning experience.
The Million Paws Walk audience is incredibly varied in demographics based on registration statistics from previous years. New media is the primary channel used to gain event attendees, more specifically Facebook, Email newsletter and the Million Paws Walk website. There is also a small amount of traditional media, print and radio, that was sought out however this did not affect me too much due to the Communications Manager having more established media contacts to carry this out.
I found my role, to write website
and social media content thoroughly enjoyable. My supervisor gave me quite a
bit of freedom to test what is more or less engaging on the Facebook event page
and trends showed that cute dog pictures always win likes.
Having reached record breaking numbers of registrants already I am incredibly proud of the input that I have had in this campaign and look forward to attending the event to see it all fall into place (one can hope). The largest challenge I am facing at this point in the semester is the ability to juggle my internship and the 3 other units I am enrolled in along with a number of other personal commitments.
Wish me luck!
