Amateur actor or PR intern?

Hey guys,

So The Urban List has just blessed me with the most amazing experience and the opportunity to be in a video shoot that will be broadcasted nationally on their website. Having regular articles on the website was one thing... but having my face in a national video campaign is another!

It all started with a few conversations here and there regarding a national video campaign for MadFish Winery. It was a 'Dinner Party' styled shoot, something very casual and relaxed but having the wine as the main star. The guys needed some extra hands on the day and some help setting up and getting all the equipment on site. I went about my merry way helping out wherever I could and taking extra time out of my week to make deliveries and pick native and rustic flowers from around my neighbourhood (I know.... probably illegal but it was so much fun).

Then the day came around and I was asked to bring a change of clothes so I could get ready... In my head I was thinking "Hollyyyy Molllyyyy my face is going to be on camera..."

So in a scramble to get the table settings finished, the flowers in order and the food platters looking extra delish, I found myself walking down the street with a camera guy behind me, a friend by my side and a bottle of MadFish wine in hand. The close up shots were finished, the arriving shots were done and now it was time to eat!! And boy did we eat... We had salads, main meals, alllll of the wine and the most epic cheese platter if I do say so myself (pic below).

After an hour and a half of eating very slowly, pretending to smile while I ate room temperature pasta and having my cheeks actually aching, we wrapped it up. The crew popped a bottle of champagne to ‘celebrate’ and we all had a laugh.

I have never experienced anything like this and to FINALLY see how a campaign like this was put together was truly amazing and something that I will take away with me into a future career position. This will also be amazing to add to my career portfolio because not many university student can say they have had the opportunity to be included in putting together a national promotional campaign.

Have a look at some pictures below and try not to drool over that food.

Stay tuned,

Shelby

P.S. They must of liked my acting because I’ve got another shoot this Thursday!

What an exciting experience Shelby! The food looks so delicious (would have been hard to eat it slowly) and that table setting is amazing!! Make sure you put these photos in your portfolio when applying for wedding planner positions. I am glad that your internship allows you to get up from the office desk. PR comes in all shapes and forms, but who knew acting was involved. Perhaps this campaign may take you on a whole another career path, but for now I wish you all the best in the next shoot! I expect snapchats :) Also I love the emphasis on "alllll of the wine."

Such an incredible experience and opportunity you've had Shelby! Your blog demonstrates how much PR can differ from each industry and how you can get presented these opportunities if you work hard (I know you've already had multiple amazing articles published for the Urban List which shows your potential in the industry.) Your experience shows a fun and hands-on side to PR which not everyone gets to experience. I also think it is very important to note that you should take on any opportunity that gets thrown your way in this industry because you never know what can come of it, and in your case.. another acting gig! Thinking of you for your next shoot, I hope it all goes well!

Shelby that looks like you had a great time, and what an incredible experience! This really shows a different side of PR and how interactive the profession can be. Getting out of the office is great and something that I have enjoyed when given the opportunity during my own internship. I bet you didn't think acting would be a part of your internship when you started! Oh and that food looked amazing. Have fun at your next shoot :)

Hi Shelby - and wow what a great post! Don't know how you stopped yourself from eating all that delicious food by the handful! Sounds like a great placement you found, anything that allows you to get up and away from a desk is so beneficial to your learning. And also shows how diverse a career in PR can be. I admire your willingness to try anything new - you definitely have a promising career in PR in your future. All the best - hope you enjoyed your internship!
