Fashion Week!

The Telstra Perth Fashion Festival is fast approaching, and this year I have a pretty important role!

Each year I look forward to Perths fashion week. I’ve attended the shows, I’ve reported at the festival and have volunteered as part of the PR team – but this year I get to do something even bigger! I’m a PR team member for the WA Born fashion show!

This event is run annually by Colosoul Group, and showcases both established and upcoming talents in the WA fashion industry. This years theme is life, meaning that all the fashion created is environmentally friendly, which is something I personally really align with and am excited to be a part of.

Being part of a PR team for a specialised show as opposed to the entire fashion week, means that I get to have a much more hands on role in the running of a fashion event. I get to contact sponsors, send media releases off to newspapers, and am first to hear about big decisions such as who is featured in the show, who gets to host the show and what kinds of local artists and musicians are the nights entertainment!

Another exciting part about running this event is the cause that it gets behind. Each year Colosoul chooses a charity to highlight and raise funds towards. This year they have chosen the Organ Donation and Transplant Foundation of WA, with a percentage of profits being used by the foundation to spread awareness about organ donation.

Working as part of this team has given me a huge insight into what goes on behind the scenes of an event. There are so many minute details that go into consideration and the team works super hard to see the events success.

I’m really looking forward to this particular project at my time at Colosoul Group, and can’t wait to watch the event unfold before me.

Hey Steph,

This sounds amazing! I have worked with PFF before it was sponsored by Telstra (so in like 2013) and it was one of the most incredible experiences!
You will definitely walk away with a wealth of knowledge - and maybe some tickets to the fashion shows ;).
But just take as much information as you can because it will get quite hectic and if they ever ask you to do something... just say yes!!!
You won't regret it.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your internship!

Shelby

Wow Steph this looks like a great opportunity! I know how much you love the Perth Fashion Festival, and I'm sure you will love this role. I'm really happy that as part of your internship you get to go out and experience the PR world and aren't just stuck behind a desk. I'm sure you'll be able to use all the knowledge you have picked up from both university and the previous festivals you have attended to make this event a really beneficial one for your learning experience. Hope you have a great time :)

Ahh so jealous!! That sounds like such an amazing opportunity and such a major learning experience for you working in a PR team for the duration of the event. Being involved with contacting sponsors and sending media releases to news papers will be a great source of networking for you later in the industry in you decide to stay in Perth so make sure you leave a good impression which I know you will! With such a big event like this as Shelby said I'm sure it is going to be very fast past and hectic at times but take from it all you can and don't forget to enjoy it! I look forward to your following blog posts and hopefully a lot of photos of models and designers come fashion week! #sojealous (if you didn't already gather haha)

Wow, Steph like everyone has said what an amazing opportunity for you and such a great way to get into the fashion industry. As we all know here, Perth is very small and limited so now that you have this opportunity I hope you not only learn so much from planning events and doing public relations work but also do A LOT of networking. Its a small industry in Perth so make a good impression which I am sure you will and you will go very far.

I have done work for Perth Fashion Festival and I know how stressful the environment can get especially when it creeps closer to fashion week and where you probably wont get much sleep but it will al be worth it. Enjoy it!

Hello Steph,

You are so lucky can be part of the PR team to host the fashion show. I am sure it is an amazing experiences to get to know the life of a PR Practitioner instead of just working at the desk.

As you mentioned that you needed to contact the sponsors and send media releases to the media outlets, so I would say this is a good chance for you to build up your network. A little suggestion for you - be proactive when you meet strangers and give them a good impression.

I am looking forward to your next post to see those interesting and nice pictures about the fashion show! I wish you all the best in your Internship!

Regards,
Daphney Koh

Hey Steph - loved your post! Wow what better way to gain a more well rounded understanding of the PR industry than at the PFF - I know you would have loved it! Makes it so much more worthwhile when you're not only getting you're hands dirty and taking control of your learning, but also working for such a good cause makes it an incredible experience. I've volunteered before for PFF and it is definitely stressful, but I'm sure with all the knowledge you acquired through your studies you'll ace it! Enjoy!
