New Experiences

New Experiences:

While holidaying to Indonesia on my mid-year break, I began to stress about this PR Internship unit.

Why can’t I find an internship placement?”
“What if I don’t find an internship placement and can’t graduate?”
“What if the work-load of working 2-days per week on top of my part time job and a full study load is too much to handle?”

This stress lead to many afternoons on the beach with one arm holding a coconut and another high in the air to reach wifi connection in order to send out as many applications as possible. It worked! On return from the warmth, I found myself with a couple of options and secured myself a position at Colosoul Group.

Colosoul is a not-for-profit arts and media organisation, that is entirely run by youth. The special part about working in an office full of people in a similar age-range to myself, means that it feels almost nothing like an office. Aside from the fact that everyone is working hard on his or her laptops, there is nothing about this place that feels like your typical working office. Their space is located in “The Basement” in Perth City, and is decorated with fairy lights, graffiti art and books. If the crazy décor doesn’t give the office away, the pumping music that plays all day sure does!

My first day at Colosoul saw me updating the office social media, organising sponsorship for their upcoming ‘WA Born’ fashion event and launching an online crowd-funding campaign. Rather than working as an intern, and ‘following’ the senior staff members, I am incorporated into the group as an equal team member, making the whole experience very authentic to what I may be doing in the future, and also forcing me out of my comfort zone and into the workplace right away.

Day one has already got me excited for the rest of this 3-month internship, and I can’t wait to see where this opportunity will take me!
