Press Releases & Dancing In The Office

Tanesha Brayne

My first week at Event & Conference Co. cemented what i already knew...Event management is no walk in the park.

When an advertisement was posted on blackboard with the position for an internship at Northbridge based, Event & Conference Co. i jumped at the opportunity. Not because i was desperate to work in the events industry, but honestly because i was simply desperate to find an intern position ASAP.

It was only the next day when i received an email accepting my application that the memories of detailed PR event plans came rushing back. I was anxious. I knew the work would not be easy. I knew the next 10 weeks would be no walk in the park.

I was right. The office is quaint and cosy, with room for only 3-4 staff to work. Covering the walls are inspirational quotes and i quickly realised why these were necessary. Along the only spare wall is a small kitchenette type space which i have pictured below.

The first task i was given as a PR intern was to write a press release. I was instructed that it was not to "sound 'salesy'" and that i had to focus it on the accomplishments of celebrity chef, Anna Polyviou who will be appearing at the De Lish Gourmet food expo which Event & Conference Co. are working behind. "Don't send it back without an amazing title" was my final instruction. The reality of working in a professional environment really sunk in.

The rest of that day involved brainstorming new website content and ideas for the Australian Institute of Office Professionals (AIOP) and researching possible exhibitors for the De Lish expo. All in all, the work was as expected.

On day two i met the other interns and realised that Friday's are slightly more special in the office. My first task was to source free stock images that could be used for the new AIOP website. I was looking for images that were professional yet engaging and i managed to collect 60ish. I enjoyed brainstorming how they might be utilised and visualising the finished product.

Something slightly unexpected...

What separates Friday's at Event & Conference Co. from the rest of the week is that Friday is brainstorming/ group meeting day. This wasn't just any other meeting though. Before we began, a 'warm up' was required and soon we were dancing around the room to an early 2000's hip hop playlist.

The dancing was meant to energise us and get our ideas flowing (it actually worked) and it was a fun but completely unexpected way to end the week. I know Monday will be a very busy day in the office but i am looking forward to learning even more about Event & Conference Co.

Below is an image of our little kitchen space. Flowers like the ones pictured are all around the office and have been given as gifts of appreciation of their hard work.
