My first blog will be summarising the first month of my internship at an events company in Perth.
Prior to starting my internship I wasn't completely sure what industry I'd like to complete my internship in and where I'd like to gain some first-hand experience prior to graduating. After doing some research over the mid-year break I saw an advertisement from the company requesting interns and immediately contacted. To my surprise, after a short conversation over the phone, I was told to come in for a visit the following week. On my first day of the internship, I was told to visit the Facebook page for an upcoming event, De Lish Expo. After spending the first few hours of the morning reading about De Lish Expo and looking through the many posts on De Lish's social media pages.
I was then told to research possible exhibitors for the event. The rest of day was spent collating contact information for potential exhibitors on excel spreadsheets.
Day two of the internship was spent cleaning up excel spreadsheet of exhibitors for De Lish and dividing them into categories such as dessert, coffee, ingredients etc.
Day three and four was spent researching potential coffee exhibitors and bloggers to collaborate with and then collecting contact information for excel spreadsheets.
The first month of my internship in the events industry has taught the importance of attention to detail, particularly when you are collecting contacts information for potential clients at events. The importance of impeccable spelling and grammar, as at the end of the day I was emailing my work to the directors of the company. The power of social media! I was encouraged to regularly monitor and 'like' De Lish's Instagram and facebook posts to get the word out to family and friends.
My experience so far has been eye-opening as it has taught me how much time, research and 'googling' goes into event planning. I look forward to the next few months and learning what additional steps are involved in planning for an event.
