The workplace.. is it all serious?

Through the Curtin training process to prepare students for the workplace I was introduced to countless websites about how to conduct myself to get a professional position through the resume, interview and communication process leading up to getting that job. Through assessments on how to communicate with engagement and persuasion to potential clients, negotiate with co-workers and be a team player. All of my classes mentioned professionalism and formal so many times I thought there was no other way to be within a workplace. Persuading me that working in an office would involve corporate people sitting on desks focusing on their tasks alone in silence for hours.

However, it's only when I got to this position that I realised there is a whole other way to approach your work life.

First of all, I'm in an office with three other women and we all shout out to each other when we have an idea or question. There's a co-worker that has a yoga ball as her desk chair; sometimes the yoga ball is put aside all together, and she sits on the floor.

My supervisor placed very encouraging and funny smiley faces on my board. All this happening while indian meditarian music blasting.

Hello Joanne,

Yes I also found it surprising that the work environment is not always as serious and formal as described in our PR classes. I also enjoyed working in a place where the employees' comfort matters. Even if we had to abide by certain professional codes of conduct, formal dressing was not a requirement and we were all encouraged to get comfortable because my boss believed that ,by creating a more comfortable work environment, employees will be more productive and effective. This is the kind of approach I wish to adopt if one day I get at the top of a company.
