"We are all artists"

“Public-relations specialists make flower arrangements of the facts, placing them so the wilted and less attractive petals are hidden by sturdy blooms.” – Alan Harrington

I always thought I would end up being an artist. A famous painter, dedicated to her passion. The great satisfaction obtained when mixing red and blue and getting purple; someone for whom, finishing a painting was a huge fulfilment.

Being in control of a blank canvas makes me feel lively and powerful. Today in my placement, I am getting that feeling again.

Since I started my studies in Mass communication, I asked myself so many questions. I was doubtful about my choice of specialising in public relations instead of graphic design. In my opinion, graphic design was about being creative and it would have been a way to complement my passion for arts.

Now I am extremely happy to say that I will never regret my choice!

Through my internship in public relations, from the very first few days, I discovered a new passion for writing. In fact, I tried to write a few articles for the website of the company in which I am doing my internship. Writing is also an art and my Word Document is my canvas. I will never see that blank page on my laptop like I used to see it back then. Now I can paint on it with my words.

In public relations, I discovered the art of writing first but there are so many other aspects in the field which require creativity. I think that knowing how to talk to people is also an art, by this I mean finding the right words to catch peoples’ attention.

The whole notion of building a strong image is also about being creative while being true to yourself; it’s about telling your story in a compelling way that attracts and retains attention, creates emotions and builds relations. If you don’t tell your story, others will do it for you and it might not be told in exactly the way you would have wanted it to be told. When you have the opportunity to create a story for your company, you should take it.

Working in public relations from an artist point of view

Building the image of a company

The company is subject that you want to portrait

The psyche of the different audiences is your canvas

The overall idea of what you want to achieve on your canvas would be the strategy.

The paint of different colours would be the tactics you would have to implement to achieve the strategy.

At the end of the day, the results of your strategy, positive or negative, will be your masterpiece.
Here is how I feel about public relations today and how my internship is helping me to develop my skills so far.

Hi Emilie,

I love the way you play with words to portray your internship.

Writing is an art indeed, yet Public Relations is a blend of art. Creativity is depicted as ‘the life blood of public relations.’ It is the core of big projects. For instance, the creative thinking helps in producing ideas and solving problems. However, creative thinking can be hard due to two cognitive aspects; the ‘left’ brain and the ‘right’ brain thinking. The right side generates creative thoughts and art, whereas the left side is about logic. Your post has confirmed it. I cannot agree more, one of the best way to catch the media and audience’s attention is to tell your story in a compelling way.

Thank you for drawing me into your artistic PR intern world.
Best of luck.

Hi

I appreciate the way you described your internship. It seems that you indulge a clear description of building the image of your company. You made me have a vision of your work placement. It is true that in PR, one should have a good skill of writing to boost the level of your capabilities. The way you write may help in giving you a better prospect in producing press releases, annual reports, articles and newsletters.PR practitioners need to know the current trends and issues. It helps in planning, organizing, co-ordinate tasks
to monitor and follow up with the tasks.

PR is a profession which constantly calls for fresh ideas and creative thinking.

Best of luck for your internship!

Hey Emilie. This really struck a chord in me. I didn't realise we could see PR in this way. Great piece of advice you have here. This got me thinking that even through PR 'problem-solving' nature, it definitely will be a wonderful piece of art.

Best of luck to you.
