A Change of Scenery

Hey everyone,

Today’s reflection is dedicated to the somewhat unconventional workplaces I’ve worked in for the duration of my internship. I don’t think I would be alone in thinking ‘internship’ and having my mind go straight to a large office space, cubicles, a copy room and coffee runs. So I was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed into two relaxed environments over the semester.

Firstly, working for an entrepreneur that generally works from home means no official office or workspace. Although rather than me and the other interns going to her home, we did most of our work at the Wanneroo Business Association (WBA) located at the Enterprise House. This provided a positive experience, it allowed us four to work closely and collaborate as well as take our lunch breaks and chill out together.

At times it hardly felt like work as I was completing tasks while enjoying the company of Mikayla and my fellow interns which I am extremely grateful for! The relaxed environment combined with Mikayla’s mentoring style made for an experience equally educational as it was enjoyable.

When the WBA was too busy or not an appropriate environment on certain days, Mikayla, myself and my intern buddies Ophelia and Simone, would simply pack up and head across the road to the Wanneroo public library. One of the great advantages of working from home or providing services solely online like Mikayla, is that you can pick yourself up and set up your office anywhere essentially (with a wifi connection). The change of scenery was a positive, and in our case, conveniently located above Cafe Elixir should any of us need a mid-afternoon pick me up!

See below the spacious corner of the library we called our own one Thursday, featuring Ophelia our graphic design intern.

Hello you,

sounds nice, i used to work in an office and disliked being at the other end of the room in a corner so i took my chair and sat next to my boss! I prefer being surrounded by people and having tasks that involves physical displacements since i enjoy moving around and sometimes going onsite for work. Since i am studying communications i like meeting people and stuff therefore a dynamic environment suits me best. I think that if i worked from home i'll just sleep all day long.

Keep enjoying.

You are absolutely right Bianca - where we work as PR professionals can be very different from one day to the next. Although many in-house and large consultancy roles will be based in large offices, often open-plan these days, the boutique PR agencies seem to have more of a quirky setting. I have worked in an office where our desks were up against the wall and therefore this is what we faced. I currently work in an office which is a residential building, and therefore very spacious with a huge kitchen and all of the features of a home. I've learnt you never know what to expect - especially if you're working at events and for Perth's most creative consultancies!

Hey Sarah!

I too can relate with your blog post. I used to work for a startup company which was based in a co-working space. The space was quirky, colourful, fun and very open, which was not what I expected. We even had a resident Corgi which was the best de-stress. The startup then moved into a different co-working space which was very much office like. 4 plain walls and a desk.

Going into my internship this semester, I expected a big office but instead, our desks were up against the wall exactly like you mentioned above. Although very small, it was actually more than enough. We even had a 'bring your pets to work' day and it was very interesting! It's a great reflection how we can be creative and flexible in many ways but still get the job done. Definitely agree that we'd never know what to expect and the biggest bring back I have is to really be open and absorb different experiences like a sponge.

Great post Sarah :) Good luck with your internship!
