Blog 2: Taste the real world - Intern life start!

Before I start my internship, I was informed to go the hotel few days earlier for the purpose of filling up some documents, understand the hotel rules and regulation in the hotel, getting familiar in my workplace and people here.

First day of internship:

I was told to write up a press release for the upcoming event which is sing Christmas caroling in the general hospital.

What’s in my mind?

•      People said that is a gap between the thing (hard skill) that you have learnt in the university and what the real world is. However, I found that statement is not really true because somehow I can link what I had learnt from the university to my work in this hotel.

- 

•       I feel grateful because I am not as bad as what senior told me that just sitting in the office and do nothing but I am using my skill to contribute to the hotel that I currently working with.

-          

•      Stressful. As I poor in English, I doubted my ability to take up this task. However, my supervisor keep encouraging me and willing to help me when I faced difficulties.

What I have learnt?

•       My manager told me that as working in the hotel industry, service is important. Therefore do not forget about those magic words (Thank you, Please, Sorry) and greeting to everyone even a housekeeping worker.

•      When you are not clear about anything, do not hesitate to ask your supervisor or people around you. 

• When I am not sure about the news angel, always referring back to the media clipping. Media clipping can be consider as a reference for you to refer and come out with an idea to write about press release.

This is a new semester. A new beginning.

Hi everyone!

As this is my first post for PR393 Reflective Blog, I am glad to write a little bit about myself and the place I worked at. My name is Moh Su Tin and please call me Chris. I am from Sarawak, Malaysia. Currently, I am studying at Curtin University Sarawak and majoring in PR and Management. This semester is my final year and hopefully it will be my final semester. 

For the purpose of the assignment, I, as a PR student have conducted my internship at Tenby International School Miri. Tenby International School Miri is the only International Private School in Miri which provides Early Years Programme, Primary and Secondary. Previously, Tenby International School was located at Piasau Camp. In August 2013, Tenby International School just recently moved to a new campus which located at Senadin (Beside Curtin University Sarawak) and start the school on September 2013.

I started my internship on 1st August 2013 with my friend, Vivian Lee. After a week, there is a new colleague join us as intern and her name is Wong Pei Ling. During the internship, we were led by our supervisor, Esther Choo, the marketing executive.  

On the first day of my internship, Tenby International School Miri was just moved to a new location. Thus, there are not much work to be assigned to us. Henceforth, Vivian and I were assigned to help to check the stocks for the upcoming event - Tenby Open Day and Curtin Open Day.

On the second day of my internship, me and my colleague, Vivian Lee were asked to do a survey at Bintang Mega Mall accompanied by our supervisor. During distribution of the survey forms, we also gave out the Tenby Info card to the public who help us to fill in the form. On coming Monday, me and Vivian were requested to change the location to Permy Mall and continue the survey to get different group of participants. After the survey was done, we were asked to do a summary report and submit to our supervisor. This is our first task during the internship period.

After Pei Ling joined us, Elsie, the Management Executive and our supervisor, Esther had a short briefing with us about our job scope and brought us to the tour while introduced the staff to us. Meanwhile, I was assigned to do the competitor analysis and the map for the Tenby Open Day held on 1st September 2013.

Up to this point, I hope you guys have a better understanding on me and the place I worked at. Guess I will just stop at this point. Next week I'll post about the preparation and the Tenby Open Day.
