Challenges I Faced & Questions I Have

As my internship comes to an end I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon my exciting experience at gtmedia. This includes insights into the consulting side of PR, challenges I faced, and questions I have.

After three years of studying PR and Web Communications, I was not completely sold on a career in the PR industry. The work I had done in class was somewhat practical, but still very theory based, and I had reservations about whether I would enjoy a job in this field. I also had very little confidence in my writing, getting average results most of the time. Truthfully I enjoyed the Web Communications half of my degree more, and was leaning towards finding a career in social media. However, after spending some time interning at gtmedia this is no longer the case. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my time at gtmedia, as working in a consultancy, no day was the same. I was also exposed to a wide range of clients, from property developers to contemporary dance companies, which I really enjoyed.

I did face some challenges throughout my industry placement. As I mentioned before, I had very little confidence in my writing, including issues with tone and formatting. Receiving one-on-one feedback from my superiors helped me pin point areas I needed to work on, and their encouragement made me want to keep improving. I also faced challenges to do with confidence in my professional communication. A successful PR professional must be able to network and build strong relationships with clients and journalists. I was still not overly confident with my conversation skills, but I found that learning from my superiors on shoots, I was able to build on these. They still need improvement, but I am drastically more confident than I was before and I believe these skills will continue to grow with time and practice.

My internship also helped me realise the importance learning PR theory at University. When applying it to my work at gtmedia I was able to recognise how a good strategy must start with a solid base of PR theory. I also saw it in the work of my superiors. My application of PR theory then lead me to understand the concepts I was learning at University more comprehensively, and I even found my marks improving. I faced many personal challenges during my internship, but with the encouragement and support of my superiors, and a bit of confidence in myself, I was able to overcome these.

The real word of PR was nothing like I thought it would be. Prior to my internship, my knowledge of the industry came from a textbook, and I also was subject to the general public perception that PR professionals are 'spin doctors'. After seeing gtmedia's ethical approach to work, and their healthy relationships with clients and journalists, I was puzzled as to why these negative public perceptions existed. For an industry that works to build strong reputations, this raised the question for me as to why the PR industry had a bad reputation itself. Even people like Mumbrella CEO Tim Burrows were pleasantly surprised when working with the top people in the PR industry, as like many others, he had reservations about the moral compass of people working in the PR industry. From my research whilst completing my final report, it seems PR consultants get a bad name from inexperienced people in the industry. So as person just starting in this industry, I ask the question: How can I, and others in the same position as me, correct this negative perception? This is a big issue for the industry and I would definitely like to work alongside other PR professionals to help implement ethical practice and correct this reputation problem.

My time at gtmedia has been an experience I am incredibly grateful for. I absolutely loved working at a consultancy amongst like-minded people, and I hope I can use this experience to help gain a position in industry once I have graduated.

Beginning of my PR Internship Journey

Greetings!

My name is Corina Ling. I am a student studying in Curtin University, Sarawak Campus. I am majoring in Public Relations and Management. So happy to say that, It is my final semester in Curtin University! Moreover PR 393 is my last unit of my PR course. Really treasure it and hope I can take advantages to learn a lot of things from this unit.

First of all, it is my first time doing intern and write blogs. And luckily I have been approved to start my internship experience in Curtin Corporate Comm.!! Thanks to Miss Marcella (my supervisor) for giving me the opportunity! Anywhere, I am so nervous on my first day work in the office but my colleagues were really kind and willing to teach me. They make me feel that "we are the family". Miss Marcella introduce each of my colleague and their job scope for me which include:
  • Branding
  • Advertising
  • Design
  • Publishing
  • Campaign

And I can have the opportunity to have a try of all these area. By her introduction, I feel so wonderful because I learnt all theories in my previous class before, but till now only I really can learn how to implement those theories into the real world. I am working with all these awesome people right now! I am doing PR job right now! I can't wait for what will happen to me next!

Next is about my job, I have been arranged to read all of the newspapers (from everyday) which are being kept on the tables and collecting all the news and advertisement which are related to Curtin University Sarawak and then keep them into the files (news clipping) and also key in all the data into PC. I think it is my first time read so many newspapers in a day, never knew I have to read so much news in a day. The majority of newspapers that I have read are:
  • New Straits Times
  • The Borneo Post
  • New Sarawak Tribune
  • See Hua Daily News
  • Sin Chew Daily News
  • United Daily News
  • Utusan Sarawak
  • Utusan Borneo
By reading all these newspapers, I understand what is going on outside the organisation and how is the reputation of organisation in the eyes of its stakeholders so that we can improve or maintain organisation's reputation through communication strategy. Then I totally understand why my lecturer always told us that "As a PR student, you must read newspapers everyday, as good as read different type of newspapers in order to know what is going on in the real world". Reading newspapers really help PR person a lot especially on their research.

Through news clipping, we can keep all related information in the file and make it manageable, it can help PR person to find their information easily in the future and reduce time wasting.

Will be sharing more on my internship journey soon. Thanks and wait for my next post. :)

Being a good sport - Part 2

After all the data entry, photocopying, lecture drops and flyer runs the best part of my job has come along! Planning events for University Games, I am so excited!  Uni Games as they are more commonly referred to are held each year in a capital city in Australia where each of the major universities compete in various sports and disciplines.

This year the games are in Adelaide, South Australia from the 23rd to the 28th of September.  After doing lots of the nitty-gritty stuff the last few days, my next task includes planning an information session, planning a fundraiser event at a nightclub, promoting these events and making sure they run smoothly.  I am thrilled because it is the first time during this experience I will be able to have a bigger role in the decision making about these events.

Honestly the biggest challenge I have had so far is learning how to make a good poster! It sounds really easy but to get it looking like a proper poster and not a primary school finger-painting is not as easy as I thought it would be. Other than that the response has been quite good so far, luckily for me Uni Games has quite a reputation in itself so I have not really had to try too hard to get our publics interested.  The only hard part about the reputation is most students see it as a cheap holiday with their mates, to drink party and be merry.  Essentially that is a part of it, but we also want to win some sporting events as well.

My next challenge will be to curb the reputation a bit, make it more about quality sporting than just partying.  I will be working with the Elite Sporting Manager next week to discuss strategies and see if we can snare any state or national players to give Curtin a fighting chance.

Until next time,

Jade Fairbairn
