Drafts on Drafts on Drafts

Occasionally I would have to design material for the non-profit organization I work for, and working in the real world is the best way to learn.
Recently I've been requested to design a fridge magnet for the super clinic and such a simple task can become tricky and tedious when dealing with very strict rules and regulations and collaborating with so many other healthcare providers.

I usually work on a lot graphic design outside of my internship and it usually takes about 2 or 3 drafts to reach the end product that the person had in mind. However, throughout this task, it took about 8 to 10 drafts when it came out to layout, design, and content.

Cockburn Integrated Health is looking to be appealing to the Cockburn Community, yet has to maintain professionalism and seriousness as a health care provider. So it's a bit challenging in a way that I can't get too creative with the designs and layouts, and have to keep them simple and to the point with not too many distracting graphics or imagery.

Here are a few sample fridge magnet designs made:
DRAFT 1

DRAFT 2

DRAFT 3

DRAFT 4
(The photos seem to appear slightly different on Blogger, the background is supposed to be more transparent on white)

As the designs progressed its obvious that the amount or size of the graphics are greatly reduced and the majority of the oddly A5 sized fridge magnet consists mostly of text. The organisation's ideas mostly rely on delivering a message rather than using visuals or just making their material look attractive rather than useful, which is understandable when looking at it from the perspective of a customer seeking medical advice.

With this knowledge it gives me an idea on how to work on my next task: the brochure.
The purpose of this brochure is to provide information on the types of services provided in the Cockburn Integrated Health & Community building, and phone numbers, operating hours, a brief description, and web address. the visuals and content must be minimal and to the point, referring to the fridge magnet task as a guide on how to go about it.

Cockburn Integrated Health - A 3 Man Show

The first two weeks of my placement at Cockburn Integrated Health have not been so eventful...

A little about the organisation:
Cockburn Integrated Health is a unique nonprofit organisation that provides many health care services a platform to operate. It is a new organisation that was established in 2014 As a super clinic, they have many services:

  • General Practice
  • Pathology
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Pathology
  • Dietetics
  • Psychology
  • Child Health
  • Migrant & Refugee Services
  • Workplace Injury & Rehabilitation Services
  • Wound Management
  • Employment Services
  • Psychiatry
  • Orthopaedic Services
  • Curtin Clinics

With that, there is a lot of PR work that needs to be done!
With the CIH staff consisting of only one person, the CEO Clory Carrello, he relies on his interns to bring and present CIH to the Cockburn community. Currently, it's me, Clory, and another intern from Curtin Sterwina who are the PR officers for the organisation.

Since it was newly established, Sterwina and I have created the first newsletter for CIH, where we have learned the to-dos and not when it comes to publishing and obtaining release forms for the people in the photos.

As interns, we are the firs to publish materials, create templates, and set the image for CIH. We also created a Facebook page for organisation to attract the public. we were put in charge in managing and updating the website for it to stand out from other super clinics in the area, as the website was quite outdated and unattractive.

The other intern and I have a good dynamic going on, she deals with content, and I deal with design.
So with such a small team, we work with very tight deadlines and a lot of content creation and organisation.

The next few weeks will be quite hectic as we get the next newsletter done, a fridge magnet designed, the website completely remade, Facebook page up and running, along with many other tasks.
