My first entry - My first week

Hi all,

I have just started my internship with a government organization, due to the sensitivity and confidentiality of some of the materials and people I come in contact with. I will be rather vague in my blog entries and I hope that everyone will still be able to follow along.

I am currently not attached to the public relations department within the organization however the department which I am working in, is involved in publicity and public relations work which pertains directly to its own target audience. (Some of our business clients).

The first few days of my internship has been very interesting, with a lot of activities and learning opportunities. I have actually managed to apply some of the theories or tap onto the knowledge which I have attained through my past PR units.

For example, I was involved in a dialogue session between my department as well as some of our business clients and their representing body to sound out how the current economic situation is affecting them. Also due to the fact that we will be implementing some changes, this was a platform to better understand the sentiments of our stakeholders before deciding on the approach for any impending announcement. This is definitely something we as PR students have always been reminded of. That while having to take care of our own company’s interest, we are also required to cater to the needs of our stakeholders, in ensuring that relationship is not compromise in any way.

I was also involved in regular headquarter visits which involved a top level representative from our company, calling on the CEO of specific business client. This was a platform to engage the client as well as to show continuous interest and support. To ensure that the client has means of sharing with us any of their concerns promptly and to foster and maintain a healthy relationship.

Last but not least and probably the most exciting and relevant thing I have done all week, was being involved in a brainstorming session on how to interest and approach the media at an upcoming event. As we are not the organizers of this networking event, there were some difficulties in terms of having absolute control. However a lot of ideas were thrown around and I would say I manage to contribute a fair bit with whatever PR knowledge I had picked up in school and felt pretty good and satisfied about the outcome of the brainstorming session.

More details on that discussion in the next entry and an event and hopefully pictures next week….Till then.

Signing off...
