Hello all!
This is being written during one of the most hectic and busy periods of my internship. The organization as part of their CSR are on the verge of hosting the 2nd annual Independent youth fest which invites all youth from Malaysia to participate in competition in various disciplines such as gaming, singing/songwriting,filmmaking, dancing to name a few.
The finale or the grand event takes place in October but with roadshows planned not only for peninsular Malaysia but also the Borneo region it is quite a challenge to create publicity and awareness of the event. Nonetheless,i have been quite busy updating the media list and in due time contacting the media.
I have done the necessary of creating a press release, event announcement and media advisory which my supervisor has had a look at and edited. Again, I had it sent out to the target media and have been making follow up calls to check whether the media outlets have received it.
During the Press conference i had earlier been involved in I was also in charge of media registration before it began and then it struck me how it was essential to get to know the mediaperson's and keep good relations with them individually too. Throughout my entire internship i would never have thought or imagined how important it is that the PR department has a good relationship with the media. However, after being involved a couple of weeks in the field of PR i have been awakened to the importance of the 'collaboration'.
Until my next post I wish everyone good day!

Hey there. Seems like you are having a blast at your intership. I think it's a great deal that you are exposed to almost every aspect of PR during your stint at your company.
What did you do to create "good relationships" with the media? Did you mean you were reliable and provided relevant information to them or were you friendly? I'd like to know because the only time I've communicated with the media during my internship was to do follow up for an event. That was pretty nerve wrecking because it was my first time.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Hello! Yes,i did quite have a blast during my internship stint. I was lucky to be able to get to cover a lot of the theory we learn in 'school'.
Well, 'good relations' with the media was more of having a honest, reliable and cordial one. I had to follow up on the press releases sent out and whether they had received it, also whether they would be providing coverage on the contents of the said release. At times it is quite frustrating because everyone is running a tight dead line and occasionally i had been spoken to quite rudely but its all part and parcel of meeting deadlines and work i guess.
The media run a tight schedule so being polite and honest when you make calls to them is a great help. I realized that sections of the media and outlets are more friendly and receptive if you carry out your queries in a friendly manner. Dont worry, its fun interacting with the media in any form.
Have a good time!
