Hi All,
So at the moment Im just starting my report. I've found that its taking me a lot longer than I initially thought it would, this could just be it's my last assignment ever at uni :) and I want to put the effort into it. I have found referencing to be difficult just when I am writing about the industry I am completing my work experience in. There seems to be no information out there but I guess I'll just have to do more searching!
Overall my experience has taught me alot about working in the real world. I have found having a personality and not being afraid to say something has been really benifical to me. In Public Relations you are continually going to have to meet people and be friendly so it helps if you dont mind talking.
This unit has been one of the most helpful I've had in my four years at University. I dont think anything can beat hands on experience and when looking for that job once you graduate you actually have something to put on to the end of your resume.
I have enjoyed my time and I think you get out of it what you put in. Always ask questions and be prepared to ask to be shown how to do something. Generally your work place is willing to help you all you have to do it ask.
Personally my work experience couldn't have gone any better because I have been offered a job by my boss. He is in the near future opening a new whisky bar that he would like me to help out on. So overall from my opinion PR393 is a fantastic unit :).

Hey Nicole,
I could relate to a few things you wrote about in this post; I've found similar things during my placement and this unit.
With beginning my report I've also found there are a lot of aspects of the report and each one takes a lot of time, so it pays to begin as soon as you can or risk a possible mental breakdown later.. It will be my final uni report aswell and I want to do it and my placement justice!
Researching information about my placement organisation has also been difficult, as it's quite a recently-developed, smaller company. So I think it pays to ask those your bosses and those you worked with for as much information as you can get about the certain industry.
I agree that it's really important to ask questions and be friendly in the workplace! This may be one of the reasons you got offered a job for the future, which shows the difference your attitude can make.
Good luck with your report,
Emily
Hi Nicole,
Sounds like you have had a great placement!
I definitely agree that this has by far been the most useful unit in getting us ready for the real PR world. One of the main aspects which stand out to me is that it’s not always as smooth sailing as we were sometimes led to believe. You can do everything right and by the book and yet external people or factors out of your control can still let you down. The real test comes with how you handle yourself and rectify these situations.
I am about half way through my report and my main issue has been finding references to use. Other than that I think it’s going well though it is taking a while to get through.
Congratulations on the job offer! I’m half way through writing a blog about how many people have been laid off in my organisation while I have been there, so there will be no job offers for me :(
Well good luck for your report!
Hi Nicole,
I definately agree that speaking up and being confident helps with PR. It helps to build good relationships. I also think it's good to ask questions if unsure, as I've found it saves a lot of time and worry!
I also agree with you that this has been the best unit of my degree! I have learnt so much in the short time I have been at my placement. However I think I did need the theory of my other PR units before I could attmept this one.
It's great to hear you have a job offer that came out of the placement! Congratulations and good luck!

Hi Nicole,
I have just finished my report and I can agree it certainly did take me longer to finish. The referencing also got me I found it hard to use those theoretical examples when I was actually present in the organisation and I could see what exactly was happening. I suppose they did work into my report in the end to mainly support my recommendations to the organisation that I did my placement with.
In my placement you tended to need to show your personality in order to be noticed so I would definitely agree on you point about not being afraid to say something. After a few weeks I realised that I was there to learn how to put my text book knowledge into action and there was only one way to successfully do that and that was to ask a lot of questions!
I was updating my resume last night and I couldn’t agree with you more about how valuable this unit has been for preparing us to find a job in the public relations industry.
Lastly congratulations on securing a job from your placement. I wish you everything of the best and good luck with any final exams you might have.
Hi there!
I agree with you that it does help in the public relations field if you have an outgoing personality.
I guess I’ve never really had the confidence of an outgoing person, but I’ve managed to network and build relationships within public relations practice by always trying to be polite, taking an interest in people and how they are going, and by being a positive person. It also helps to smile ☺.
While this is more a personal hurdle of mine, I was worried that it would affect me professionally. I did feel nervous speaking to my group team members in a professional capacity during a meeting, but the experience definitely helped me push myself out of it and just go on with what I had to say. I’m sure the more I take myself out of my comfort zone the more confident I will be.
I also agree that you should never be afraid to ask questions. Narrowing down exactly what was required of me in a task helped me produce better work for both my colleagues and myself to be happy about.
Congratulations on your job offering! Wishing you all the best.
