'ROCKTOBER Guitar Fest' is a month long rock music festival that aims to provide the public with the opportunity to discover the talents of young Maldivian artists and the creativity of Maldivian youth in music and performing arts. Rocktober is also an outdoor music festival designed to be launched every October by Faraway.fm, part of the PR strategies we came up with to promote Faraway.fm while having coffee on the beautiful waterfront Seabreeze café in the Maldives, overlooking the ocean.
Rocktober is broadcast live on the Radio and streamed to the world on www.faraway.fm The resulting promotional, flyers, posters, banners, radio and TV ads utilize materials that we designed to be used in all of Faraway’s promotional events and it is very nice that slowly but surely we are building a brand.
The festival brings together young aspiring Maldivian musicians, sharing the stage with well-established bands and individual artists. The outdoor concerts are staged every weekend in October. Three very successful concerts have been held so far and the last one is to be held this Friday 30th (as I said the weekend begins with Friday in Maldives). I wish I was there, but Ehab tells me the last three were pretty fantastic and they had really good videos shot.
The concerts are held on the open-area in Male’ called Artificial Beach (Its real name!) Male is the capital island and this is on the southern side and very close to the Sea-breeze and other cafes that dot the breakwaters. It is an exceptionally beautiful environment, this area has been recently landscaped (hence “Artificial”) and the people of Male’ usually gather round here at night. Nights are fairly warm, having a temperature of 28 degrees all year round and believe you me, there are quite a lot of people that mill about in this café’ atmosphere and an event like Rocktober will catch on like wild-fire. It is perfect for bringing together young people in an environment of relaxation and enjoyment.
Well that was my last blog for this unit. As I said in my first one, I’m kicking myself for not getting started on it during my placement. It would have been really helpful to see everyone else’s experiences but nonetheless I found blogging to be a really useful tool in learning to apply PR in the workplace. Wow I can’t believe I’ve reached the end of all my PR units (and by extension my uni course). Wish all the best to everyone else whom this is their final semester. May you go on to great things in whatever career you pursue.
