I finally made my first call only to realise that it wasn't as much a hard task as i had thought it would be. The person who answered was very friendly and patient as i panicked at some point. The second call on the other hand was not an easy one. the lady kept on saying she could not understand my reason for calling. i tried to be as audible as i possibly could but the conversation was futile.
The media calls have been going on well. i can't say that calling the media is an easy task but i always remember my boss in the first meeting i attended advising us that we should avoid getting emotional when dealing with the media and that we should always ensure we are clear of the reason we are calling in the first place. That way i don't get intimidated when making a phone call.

Hi Segomotso!
I get where you're coming from. Media calls can be intimidating, especially when you're doing this for the first time and you have no idea what the person on the other end will be like.
I also blogged about it (bit.ly/6zxpcL). One tip I can give you is that practice makes perfect. You will find that we often have to contact the same person, so try to build a relationship with him/her.
And always keep a cool head, no matter how rude the other person may be.
All the best,
John.

yah its media updates, tel me about it,was the first thing i was told to do on my first day.it was not simple but somehow fun at the same time, and until now i still remember the lines i had to say "hello, you are talking to Tinnah from Samanea PR,we are updating our media list,so i wanted to confirm some info about your company" and now these lines are naturally programmed into my mind.
And i agree with you its not a simple thing to do but practice makes perfect like john sad and like you know in the PR industry we cannot do without the media.
have fun with your field my dear
enjoy & all the best
Tinnah
Greetings Segomotso.
It is comforting to know that we PR Interns are on the same page when it comes to making media calls.
This task may sound relatively "simple". Besides, how hard is it to make phone calls? We do it all the time! Alas, the media is viewed as high and mighty, busy and in demand. Our professional communication skills are definitely tested - with different personalities and backgrounds to respond to with each media calls made.
After all, PR is about making various relations and sustaining them. The media may be important but I beleive it is time we learn that at the end of each phone line, media people are indeed PEOPLE after all. They too get nervous, but if they're less than helpful.. there are always abundent of media out there that are willing to cover your stories or give you the contact informations you need.
Continue to be encouraged!
Warm Wishes,
Mei Anne (LUCT)
