Hi everybody, my name is Vincent Lee and I'm from Curtin Singapore. This is my 1st post regarding my 1st week working as a PR executive at my uncle's company, Artform Furniture & Construction Pte Ltd. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that this is actually the 1st time that someone is actually working under that title in the company for the 1st time.
As a traditional company, what PR activities means to the older generation is bringing customers or clients out for meals, playing golf with them, showering them with gifts and "red packets", and bringing them to karaoke lounges to discuss business deals or sign contracts. I knew from the start that it was going to be a challenge for me to change their mindsets, and probably that some of my ideas will be rejected.
Nevertheless, I started out by doing a small presentation to my uncle and Operations Manager what does the term "Public Relations" stand for and what benefits can they bring to a company, informing them that the PR they know is actually a small part of the bigger picture, or should I say not what PR professionals practice at all. I will be presenting a proposal comprising of a series of PR activities and what should be done.
Will keep you guys updated in my next post. See you!!

Hello Vincent!
It is sad how PR is often misunderstood as simply "entertaining" clients and "sucking up" to the media.
Recently, I myself asked my boss, "So what exactly is the difference between PR and Marketing "in the real word"?'. Well, short term goals are the same, which ultimately is all about SALES. In the long run however: PR is all about the awareness and association with the brand (our clients) so more PR value is added.
So remember Vincent to always look at the long run! Good luck with your awesome proposal to change the perception of PR!
Cheers,
Mei Anne.
Hey Vincent,
It must be exciting to be a PR pioneer in your uncle's company. I can't imagine too many of us interns would have the chance (or free reign) to craft an entire proposal for our clients and even tell them what PR is all about.
So go forth and show them how its done!
Cheers,
John.
