How the small things matter...

Hello everyone!

I began my placement at Myer in Perth working for Melissa Sulcs the Public Relations and Events Co-ordinator a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. Melissa has been a fantastic role model for me, since working for her and I definitely think I have found my niche. One thing that has surprised me the most is how screamingly important relationship building is for an organisation and how those relationships are sustained and worked on every day. Like any organisation this includes publics on every level. Throughout my time there I have already learnt so many new things, mainly about how to put into practice (even the simplest of things) what I have been learning at uni for the past three years.

On Tuesday last week Myer Perth held their 2010 Autumn/Winter fashion workshop which I was lucky enough to be thoroughly involved with. The event included Jennifer Hawkins being in store for the workshop and taking part in a number of interviews and being apart of an in store signing after the show. The lead up to this event was fast paced and exciting. The array of tasks to be completed once again confirmed my thoughts that a public relations practitioner must be willing to complete all tasks no matter how minor they may seem in order for an event to be a success.

The event was carried out professionally with every one involved being very satisfied with the show, Jennifer Hawkins performance, the staging set up and the clothing combinations put together. Many of the simple things I have learnt through my PR degree have been slowly highlighted to me throughout numerous tasks of how extremely important they are. Communication between suppliers, internal staff, media etc was clear, effective and consistent there for resulting in a great event with a large audience turn out and extensive media coverage. Elements in many of the organisation processes were methodical and constant insuring no angle, task or person missed or forgotten.

As a person working in this field the importance of having the right attitude became very evident to me. The tasks that one can be faced with could be from writing media releases to wiping down dirty chairs to meeting and greeting media. All jobs add to the success of the end result and it is important that when working in this field every one is prepared to do even the dirty or simple jobs.

The event overall gained wide spread media coverage and a large Myer customer turn out on the day. This event demonstrated Myer’s ability as an organisation as having successfully sustained good relationships with key publics ie media, customers, suppliers etc. This event in many ways was a success because of the thriving relationships established there fore both parties involved gaining rewards. Good communications and an ability to developed and sustain working relationships are definitely the foundation for any good public relations.

Polly, it sounds like you have a very interesting placement opportunity.
I have to agree that relationship building is a key area in public relations. One thing I have noticed since beginning my placement is that the executives always put a lot of effort in maintaining relationships with executives from other companies.

Do you have any suggestions for building maintaining good working relationships?

good luck Cassie

Hi Polly,

Your placement does sound like it has been lots of fun!

I too have found that the small things matter! working within my role there have been lots of little changes to the events I have organised, things like patron numbers and set up decisions can really have an effect of the 'end product'(aka a successful event)

I hope you have enjoyed the rest of your internship!
