My First Entry

Hi everyone:)

This is only my first blog post, which is really bad of me I know! But getting settled into the placement and trying to get through all of the work, in all honesty I forgot about the blog for a little while. So it looks like this is going to be a long one!

I am doing my placement with a relatively new not-for-profit organisation called the Global Good Foundation. They were established in 2007 (I think!) and their work revolves around helping those affected by Domestic Violence. Here's a link to their website if anyone is interested; http://www.ggf.org.au/

I think what really sets this placement apart from most, is that I am completing it from home. Because the organistion is so new and there is currently a lack of funds, they have yet to set up an office. At first, it was a little bit difficult to get motivated with the distractions of home-life constantly surrounding me e.g. T.V., Facebook, housemates etc. But I have since developed a routine and am finding the experience really enjoyable. I get to work at my own pace, and do the work when it suits me. My supervisor emails me work she has assigned. She's always available to answer emails or phone calls if I ever have any questions which make's it all a lot easier.

We have PR board meetings which occur on the second Wednesday of each month. I've only been to one so far with another coming up soon, but it was a great experience. There are a few other student's there completing work experience placements, and a couple of more experienced consultants as well which so far to me has seemed to be a great combination. At the first meeting, I took the minutes. I was so paranoid I was doing it wrong or not noting the right points of the meeting! Turns out I did a better job than I initially thought.

Examples of some work I have done so far/am working on is compiling a databases of Australian publications with information such where they are, contact information and circulation. I'd like to thank Margaret Gees for helping out with my Australian Newspaper database :) I'm also currently working on another one that unfortunately, Margaret Gees isn't proving to be much of a help on.

My major task so far, which I am still working on is developing a media strategy for an event the organisation are holding later in the year. Receiving that task was rather daunting at first look, but the more I have done the more confident I am getting.

Can't believe I left writing my first blog so late! There's always plenty of work and plenty going on with the organisation I am completing my placement at so no doubt it won't be too long before my next entry!
