After approximately 4 months of internship at Amnesty International Mauritius Section, I am now fully conscious of the fundamental role that plays PR in an organisation, and more importantly in a Not-for-profit one. NGOs depend almost exclusively on PR to attract funds, supporters, members and general social attention.
As any NGO, AIMS does not generate monthly revenues but depends solely on a yearly budget allocated by the International Section. Therefore, AIMS relies more on publicity rather than advertisements and needs PR in its every day functions.
AIMS need healthy relationship with the public for various reasons:
1. To create awareness about the organisation among the general public
2. To make clear the role of Amnesty International in society and promote mutual understanding between AIMS and its public
3. To lobby governments or corporations to influence policies
4. To establish strong relations with the press
5. To improve internal communication (between Board, and members and supporters of AIMS)
6. To influence attitudes and behaviors of the general public
7. To educate the public about Human Rights
8. To meet their overall objective of empowering an increasing number and range of Mauritian to stand up for justice effectively and networking with NGOs and civil society.
Public Relations are central to all activities and campaigns designed by AIMS.
During my internship, I had the utmost privilege to assist the organisation in all its PR activities. I had the opportunity to write media releases and two articles in its monthly newspaper DIME, assist three press conferences, prepare a concert, voice out my opinions about the new website of the section, prepare a pitch for a “Street Harassment” Campaign and so much more.
I worked in a team who trusted my capacity and ability in working in a PR field. This internship not only helped me gain professional skills, but it also helped me to sharpen my interpersonal skill, and to believe in myself.
While studying PR has triggered in me the passion for communication, this internship has opened up new career perspectives and I am grateful to all those I encountered in this great organisation.

What we need in case that we improve public relation of our organization?
We should keep good relationship with our employers, convince them by marital specificities’ bonuses, and encourage them; by established working environment, let them to participate on meetings, gate decisions according to improve SWAT analysis of our organization.
When we observed all these stapes, on that time we can earn satisfaction of our customers and consumers, we make a good image of our organization on community, respect to their ideas, to keep them our permanent customers.
