Air Mauritius Annual Meeting of Shareholders – Our Island in the Sky

On Thursday, 22 July 2010, Air Mauritius hosted their Annual Meeting for its shareholders. The purpose of this meeting was to review the organisation’s performance during the year ended 2009/2010. Certain issues were discussed such as the challenges faced throughout this period and voting of the Board of Directors. The CEO, Mr. Manoj Ujoodha gave a presentation about the important aspects of what has been happening throughout the company and future strategies that will be implemented in the future, as well as issues related to hedging. At the end of the Annual Meeting, shareholders were given an opportunity to pose questions about their concerns of the Airline and the dividends. Shareholders have not received dividends since the past two years; therefore there was an intense debate between the Board members and shareholders.

My role at the Annual Meeting was to welcome the Board of Directors and accompany them to the registration desk. I also handed out the annual report 2009/2010 to each shareholder who attended the meeting. It was a great experience to sit through a large corporation’s annual meeting. The duration of the meeting was approximately 2 hours and at the end refreshments were served. This was the most interesting part for me because I was able to interact with the Chairman, the CEO and the media.

The day after the Annual Meeting, I had to prepare a media release on the Shareholders Annual Meeting that was sent to different media outlets. Again I drafted the media release to the best of my ability and then senior management corrected some information, but majority of my work was sent to the media.

This is the last week of my placement so I am making the most of it.

Do your best and stay motivated people J
