Hi all
I have just started my first week at Alzheimer's WA and I must say my first day did not go as well as I expected. After my first day I left feeling very upset and disappointed as I felt that I was only there to undertake boring tasks. When I returned home after my first day, I thought of every way possible to end my internship. After having a moan to Katharina, who pretty much told me that it was up to me whether I stay or not, however the more experience you can get the better.
I decided to stick it out and am currently on my second day of placement (I do 3 days a week) and it's already looking a lot better. Early this morning, another intern and I were asked to the meeting room in order to discuss job allocation for our time here. I am studying PR and Marketing; however I enjoy the marketing side a lot more. I have been asked to produce a complete marketing plan (as well as other tasks) from scratch for a new program the foundation has implemented called Dementia Champions.
I have worked on my strategy all day and have come to realise that this is not just another assignment, but will most probably be actioned by the foundation (if it is good enough). I am really excited to present it to my 'boss' as I have developed some new slogans and key messages, which I believe could very well be a major part of the campaign. It is a bit surreal to think that something you have developed will actually be used and implemented by an organisation.
I am now grateful that Katharina encouraged me to stick to my placement, even though I don't think PR or non-profit organisations are the direction I want to take in my career. Without us interns the Alzheimer's foundations would be kept on their toes (even more than they already are) and they really appreciate all the help they get. Just keep in mind that the first day may not be what you expect, but try and stick to it as in the long run it will benefit you.

Just be positive and I am sure it will go well. Give it time and I am sure you will settle in as time goes along :)
