Thrown in the Deep End

Hello Fellow Experiencers,

So i have just completed my first week of work experience at Dynomedia. At first i was a little worried about whether or not i would be working specifically within the discipline of public relations. Turns out, i am smack bang in the middle and swimming in the deep end.

My biggest learning curves so far:
  • At uni we are given and learn the strategies and the ultimate outcome and it seems to easy to put together. BUT, the little details can quickly consume a whole day of 9 - 5! It hard to keep your eye and have faith that the final product will actually materialise at some point. I guess thats why all those guest speakers said the hours were long!

  • The owner, manager or whoever your taking advice from or filling their demands, often doesnt know how to go about public relations if you are not working in a public relations company. I am in a media production company who wants to expand their clientèle (thus the pr needed). I have found myself often having to keep the goal realistic, defined and in order. Often, my supervisor is turning to me for my point-of-view, such as coming up with a slogan and ideas for the website, which bears a big responsibility out here in the real world.

  • Time management! Doing things that are needed in the right order and not skipping ahead because things get messy. Lists! How important they are. Lists of phone numbers, lists of jobs too be done, lists of things to be checked daily, and ticking each thing off as you go through your day. Sometimes, you dont even get to put a tick next to anything but when you do, thats a mighty big tick!!!

  • And finally, fresh air! After 6 hours inside on a computer your head feels like it could possibly explode, thats when the eyes hurt, the creativity stops flowing and the grumpiness sets in. Get out and smell the roses (or the rain) at least a few times a day :)
The deep end has involved me working with fellow Curtin work experiencer Nikki on putting together a public relations plan for multiple target audiences with different messages, creating client lists and mail merges (one of those little things that took all day), dealing with clients, creating and sending a complete email newsletter and creating and finishing an entire business proposal to expand our clientèle into the corporate sector. Oh and some internal policies in there somewhere.

Next weekend im attending a bridal expo for the wedding video production side of the company so ill get my fair dose of smelling roses then :)

Hope everyone else is enjoying their work experience.
Toodles,
Monique

Hey! I totally understand about doing up mailing lists and merging. I had the task of creating a database from scratch and there was so much technical skills involved. Very tedious job, but an important one! I think it is really great that we get to learn all these in our internship.
Haha, and yes this is my first office job and sitting in front of the computer for hours can be really stifling!
All the best for the bridal expo coming up!

Hi Monique

Fully understand that importance to actually leave your desk and have a break even if it is for only 10-15mins

Lists have now become my life :) it's so much easier to time manage when you have your jobs for the day written day and that sense of accomplishment by putting that tick next to them - amazing

good luck with your final project
