The first day I started my internship at ROOTZ ASIA PACIFIC was not easy at all waking up early in the morning to catch a bus. Can you imagine I was the first person , worse than an early bird… Anyway it was a good experience because it somehow shows dedication which i believe to be one of the qualities for a PR person, hahahah ….
On the very first day, I was assigned to do media monitoring, (PR basics) which is one of the services provided by ROOTZ to its clients. It was quiet an experience as I began to understand how media monitoring is crucial to every organization and how its of help to keeping track with the competitors in the industry.Being with roots in the first few days made me realize that in a PR company we have to engage with the community to illustrate the results of ‘our’ clients.
From now on I would say that media monitoring somehow sets a platform for Rootz to come up with good strategic goals for its clients, which I didn’t know LAH, thanks to my internship, because I thought PR was all about events, campaigns, all the fun things you can think of but Oops! too bad got it wrong, so wrong.
Working in the field of Professions sometimes would make you feel as if you are a bug LAH, you know how small it is right, so you feel left out as if you are being undermined or something. Surprisingly at Rootz Asia I had the opportunity to do something I should think motivated me and kept me going through the whole day because the 1st day is always too long*. Anyway guess what… wait for it wait for it, hahahah Media calling..wow it was good to know that already day 1 I could show ma PR skills that I got from my studies. There was an Epson launch the next day so I had to get as much media to attend the event as possible. I can say I was quiet good because of the response I got.As mentioned before, this placement gives me the opportunity to apply some of the Public relations basics I studied at the UNI, which is media relations.I Savy tsho knew that I represented Rootz, what ever happens in terms of the media not coming for the event while my feedback to the company was a hundred will attend then I answer to the company, how cool is that, I ges not cool enough. It is a challenge.lol
The best Part of the day I never knew how to appreciate something, but working wit Rootz on my first day made me realize that acknowledging is really important especially in PR some how we build a good relations with the key publics for a good image which Public relations is all about. I mean I kept on saying thank you to everything, guyz I’m so been groomed in a good way.
wow for now I can say I love my work as an intern and because I think m already part of the Rootz family…hahaha...
To ya’ll my course mate is either u wnt them to treat u like an intern or staff, its up to you to decide… Ciao. AL THE BEST LETS ENJOY OUR PLACEMENTS RATHER THAN STRESS ABOUT IT… cheerios.

Hi!! Saviour.
Do not be angry for waking up early in the morning, its better here because there is no winter, just imagine back at Botswana where you will be waking up early in the morning during winter to go to work. By the way, media monitoring is something which is very vital to the companies, it does not only reflect on how long the article about your client is, or how much content is , media monitoring also allows you as the PR person to see what your competitors do to beat your company, it allows you to see what to improve in your organisation so as to be the best organisation.
thanks, enjoy your stay at Roots Asia, that is one of the best PR consultancy, i know, i once covered their HSBC( one of their client) event while i was still a journalist.
Hey hey Thabang
I really appreaciate ur comment dear, nway yah you so right .Media monitoring allows PR practitioners to keep track on what the competitors do to beat them, somehow it helps them to come up with EFFECTIVE strategic communication plans .
I guess you will agree with me on this, an organization needs to remain competitive at all times to open up to new opportunities which contributes to the of success of an organization and this my dear shows strength .
Oh thanks on the tip of ROOTZ being one of the best PR consultancy, I did not know however from what they have done so far I would say they are good and I am so honoured to be with the company and contributing what I have learnt in the UNI.Soo I can say yeap I am already learning and its great, got a lot coming through watch the space.
Waking up in the mornig is something else but if you love what you do you might as well be cool about it, like I am now because I enjoy working there.
Thanx Thabang : )
hey Tshono
waking up early is really a drag but what to do, we soon going to be venturing into the working life where it will not just be for 6 weeks.
sounds like you are in a real strategic environment,i hope you are taking in and storing as much as possible for future use. if we use this opportunity to our advantage i bet you we can bring a significant change to our country maybe even pioneer it into becoming a developed country. keep your head up dear, at the end of the day knowledge + experience are the keys to opening a diverse and productive future.
Thnx Godirilwe, i agree with you 100%.we can use what we learning to contribute in the development of our country and i should say this placement has opened up our minds to think beyond...
we not only applying what we have learn from the Uni, we also learning new things in the field of professions. I am impressed
Even though waking early is not easy as we are used to flexible lifestyle of being students,it is also a lessom about the industry. It is evident that in the industry, time is everything and valuable.
Additionally, the wealth of experience we gain is worth it.
It was a good impression for the first day at work, remember first impression counts. As for me I was assigned to do media tracking before the event, that is to send invitations, call the media and ask if they have received our invitation. Its really challenging because if less media come for the event it shows that some how you did not do something correct. Can you please tell me about the challenges you face when you monitor the media and how you tackle them?
Hey Tshono
Loved going through your post, its interesting to know that you love what you do and having an insight of what PR is really about!!well i have also discovered that PR is very broad, and on a serious note i thought that Pr was all about campaigns, i was shocked to find out that there is a lot to it than just campaigns. :-) Good stuff right there!!so far i have been in the public affair division, which is all about relating with the community at large and keeping them posted about the upcoming events, this also includes the media and event management......
mmmh so u also doing media monitoring??thats what i have been doing from day one of my intern, were i had to compile all the clips into one folder for the client.:-).I have also been placed under media relations which has contributed a whole lot in improving my communications skills and have enabled to befriend a number of people from the media yeeeepy!!!
Good Luck
Can you please tell me about the challenges you face when you monitor the media and how you tackle them?
Miss Marumo, monitoring its not an easy task dear. I remember i was asked to monitor Chinese newspapers and it was not easy can you imagine reading a language you cannot understand.. hahah. Anyway as the week went by i adjusted to it just looking at the pictures and our clients' names, for instance you know the word HTC phone cannot be written in Chinese.SoI just looked at pictures and names.
Yah the other thing is missing your client's news while monitoring, its a challenge dear because my supervisor have to do the report, or should i say give feedback to the clients about their news, who their competitors are and a lot more.So sometimes i would ask my supervisor if i have missed anything because they already know which newspaper covers their clients.
So what i can say to you dear, is that what you don't know ask, if you not sure with what you are doing then learn to ask, use your good communication skills to build a relationship with your colleagues , so it can be easier for you to over come the challenges.
All the best
Thanks for your comment Botsalo, people like you keep me climbing and climbing, i really appreciate the fact that you loved my post.Anyway i think you made a good point dear, every company needs to do media monitoring which contributes to the success of the company.
I am also amazed at what your company is doing, giving feed back to the community on what you plan to do which is one of the requirements in PR , COMMUNITY RELATIONS, shows you maintaining that relationship with the community which you have already established and this is essential to the company, great.
And all i can say is keep absorbing what is brought unto you dear and you will make a great PR officer with good communication skills because i can tell being in the field of media relations you will learn a lot.
Thanks Mr Badubi, you nailed it dear, we are in a different field and trying to adjust the new lifestyle, i guess its worth every second because what we get from our placements will definitely apply it or should i say use it when we graduate.I love it, entering the industry with brilliant ideas we got from our experiences..All the best to y'all
