I would like to blog on the cross over between Public Relations and Marketing. I know I may sound really silly here, as I major in Marketing and Public Relations.
Thing is, I had the impression that Public Relations is different from Marketing, which is true to some extend but they are interlinked with each other. I was looking through PR firms in Singapore, hoping to find a company which I can intern for, and I came across East West PR, they had a job opening, a PR Coordinator which part of the job description expects doing research and developing speaking opportunities and other events and media database maintenance which requires updating and developing targeted media list, just to name a few..
This is similar to what I am doing in my placement now! During the start of my placement, I did quite a number of research based on identifying opportunities for Socialite Media to create awareness of 'what they do' in some of the trade shows they can attend to in Perth.-To get their name out more. Additionally, I had to create a list of target media, just like a media strategy document. Thirdly, I also had to create a few market research questions for their clients.
My point is.. I felt a little down when I had to do marketing stuff, I really wanted to do the fun stuff! I read the reflective blog and it seems everyone is having such a great time doing media releases, organising events, etc. However,I found out that other PR agencies require their staff to not only handle PR matters but also be able to perform certain marketing techniques as well.
Just thought I might share this with everyone, that maybe in some point in time while you are working as a PR officer you might touch on marketing as well.

I agree with you on the point that PR do need marketing to make better results.
Just like what I have to do during my internship in the Department for Communities.
I was assigned to the task of calling up community centres, nursing home or any community service and asked them about the distribution of supplement that going out in West Australian.
In terms of looking for which and who to call, I realised that I need to apply some marketing skills and do some research such as looking into the "background", "consumer insight" and "demographic and psychographic" so that I could call up to the appropriate centre or person without wasting my time!! =D

Througout my internship as well, I have realised how public relations deals directrly and closely with the marketing department.
They have to daily discuss the decisions to be taken into consideration together and work as a team.
I guess many firms are now switching to IMC programs where every deparments are in correlation with each other.

I completely understand what you mean about feeling like you have to do mundane tasks and the crossover between PR and marketing.
Sometimes I have felt like I'm doing really boring tasks (like databases) but in hindsight they just made me enjoy the PR tasks much more!
I also did a lot of market research in my time at the Property Council, but I found it was something that I really liked!

Yes, i understand that marketing and PR is kinda of confusing at times, they overlap each other.
I read the other placement blogs they seem to be doing all the media releases and stuff.
Doing research(the marketing stuff is also a part of PR. These help the organisation decide and plan how they communciate and where.
I've looked up on PR jobs in Singapore, hoping to get another intern opportunity when i'm back too. All those you mentioned seem to be the requirement in most of the PR jobs there.
