And Finally... Media Releases

We're getting there slowly!

Since my last blog, I have had the chance to do a lot more of those PR activities that I expected to be doing during my time with the Department for Communities. Firstly, I have been lucky enough to write four media releases. I thought that they would come back with lots of changes for me to correct, however I didn't struggle as much as I had expected. Surprisingly I did well, and this was a boost to my confidence nearing the end of my placement. I loved doing this because I felt as if I finally had the chance to use some of those skills that I learnt whilst at uni. It seemed as if I spent most of my time doing typical administrative duties, and less time doing those duties that I had initially expected to be doing. As such, here is my-

Lesson 2: Employers have to gain your trust before they allow you to do the "big jobs". Without getting to know you, and getting a feel for your abilities, it is difficult for employers to trust you with the more important tasks.

On the topic of media releases, I was also given 11 media releases and was asked to send them off to relevant media outlets. Each of the media releases were on the same topic but catered to a certain region or suburb. I was given a database and a booklet detailing all the information for the media outlets within WA. It was then completely up to me to decide on the appropriate outlets and to send them out. This was beneficial in the way that I was firstly exposed to media releases and how they should be written; and secondly was given the opportunity to gain some knowledge on the type and number of media outlets out there.
