I was always under the impression that while doing up the target media list in PR (Media) the submission of the 'story' to the media contacts were all media releases? Additionally, the media placement strategies was an elaboration of the media release content...
Thinking back... What in the world was I thinking? It does not make sense..
Anyway, I WAS WRONG! Most magazines want articles and newspaper/radio wants media releases. Of course it entirely depends on the media publication's submission requirements.
Rule of Thumb: Always check and double check what the publication wants! First impression always count!

thanks for your sharing, i thought the same things as well... sometime i even think i got really confused with media release and the news article..i mean the style of how to write them
I think this is where developing relationship really counts. In my previous job as an accounts executive assistant at a events and marketing company, most times my colleague would check with the journalists themselves what they're looking for.
He told me that after a while, he learned what certain journalist or publications "preferred", which allowed him to cater more tailored tactics, particularly if he really needed a specific publication to be there.
