Blog # 2: Promoting International Travel.

So it’s the 20th of January, 2011. I’ve been working at Curtin Business School International (CBSi) for approximately four months and this is my second blog. Yes, I know that I appear slack in keeping my blogs consistent but in my defence I only work about 5 hours a week and with the Silly Season taking over my December the time has just flown by!

Over the past few months I’ve spent working at CBSi, I’ve been busy creating promotional materials such as posters (pictured) and flyers to encourage students to partake in a three week study tour that is to take place in Germany this year. It’s an amazing opportunity for Curtin students, so amazing in fact that I’ve decided to actually go myself! The tour is not only great in that you get to travel to Europe but it also substitutes the Business Capstone unit. Equally fantastic is that Curtin Business School grants each student with $1500 to help with expenses.
The promotion of this study tour has been one of my favourite tasks so far in that I really feel that I’ve taken ownership of the whole process. From the preliminary research into the program, to the communication with staff and with students I really have felt like this project has been my baby! Below is a link to the European Business School summer program website. This is where the study tour will be held in Germany. The campus there is absolutely stunning! http://www.summer-school.info/
In evaluating the success of the promotion I am proud to say that the numbers have increased from five students that went last year to approximately twenty that are going this year. In reflecting upon the positives I am also equally interested in the criticism. I heard through the grapevine that teachers, other than the CBS Course Advisors I had notified, would have liked to have been informed so I’m looking to do this with upcoming study opportunities that have arisen at Shanghai University in China and Strathclyde University in Scotland. It would also be great if there were other channels of communication that I could reach students with. An Oasis link or email would be ideal but Justin has mentioned that Oasis can sometimes become too congested and information can be overlooked.

Could anyone else suggest other channels of communication that I could reach students with?

Offering students with study opportunities that span across the world is an important part of what CBSi does and it not only enriches a student’s university life but it also helps Curtin to build stronger connections with various universities across the globe. In building stronger relations with other universities, Curtin is strategically well placed. In sending students to an overseas university there is often an exchange agreement that the university hosting Curtin students will return the favour and send students to us. A perfect example of a two-way mutually beneficial relationship.
Finally, if you happened to catch a glance of my first blog you would have noticed I was quite anxious about the idea of setting up a blog that I could use to collect student testimonials. Currently this task is in its early stages and I’m brainstorming how to creatively collect information from students across Curtin campuses and Partner Institutions in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Mauritius and Sydney. The main idea that we’re running with is to offer a prize such as an iPad to entice students to make a contribution. The tricky part of this task is that it is going to be conducted across international boarders. This means that a one-fits-all approach won’t be suitable. My first campus to collect student testimonials from is Charles Telfair in Mauritius and I am waiting to hear back from their Academic Registrar with information on the communication channels she recommends students will best respond to.

In the meantime I’m continuing work on the Shanghai University and Strathclyde University promotions and there are numerous other study opportunities becoming available so I’m certainly kept busy as I’m sure all of you are too!

Until my next blog, I hope you’re all enjoying the week and gaining some great experience from your placements.
