Media Relations
Having worked in a PR firm I now understand the need to have good relations with the media as PR organisation. We need the media to write/broadcast on our client so they get known out there. I used to think media gifts were a rip-off to the organisation but now I understand better. Sometimes it is good to just go out with the media for lunch or dinner just to strengthen the relationship.

In most cases Public relations work to obtain free publicity for their client this is done by sending press releases to journalists containing the information needed to write a positive story about the client. Newspapers, radio and TV stations are always looking for fresh story ideas, particularly those with a "human interest" angle. So in this manner, you see how the two PR and Journalism depend on each other in fulfilling each other's requirement.
Hey Alicia, media professionals (journalists) and public relations professionals are interdependent. So, I'd say each one of them cannot function well without one another. PR professionals need publicity and journalists need stories so their relationship is so important to both of them and that is why they have to maintain it. So buying lunch is not a rip off, like you mentioned, it is one way of strengthening a relationship.
