INTRO TO PUBLIC RELATIONS FROM A DIFFERENT POINT OF VEIW (THE INDUSTRY)

Greetings good people, My name is Dimpho Kgabo from LUCT . This marks the 1^st post ever after having been introduced to public relations, this is an opportunity for me to reflect on what I have learned in the academics era as I’m reflecting comparing it to the current Public relations industry in Botswana. Having been privileged to intern at Jwaneng town council my acquired experience will be shared with you all in the world of bloggers.

To my professional practice I joined the Jwaneng Town council at a time when the PR unit was to organize a major event of that time, the handing over of the new multi million pula bus terminal to its rightful new care takers, the road transport division and the general public/Jwaneng residents.

It having been my 1st few weeks, I was given the lighter duties to carry out and they were centered around getting quotes from the local business personnel including among others catering companies, entertainment groups and also sending of invites to the media about the event. Without having practiced it before, I assumed event management was as easy task that is least demanding in the public relations practice, my internship was more like a wake call as I came to realize that talk was cheaper than practicing. The duties I was to undertake during the whole preparation for the event made me understand I little more than I knew about a saying that patience is a virtue.

Communication in the PR industry is crucial, the better your communication skills the easier the tasks, that is a lesson I learnt during my intern. Individualism has no room for stay in the industry unless one wants to burry himself due to work pressure, working together as a team makes the tasks look or seem easier.
